Thymoquinone Reduces Oxidative and Nitrosative Stress in Tongue Tissue of Rats Exposed to Total Cranial Irradiation

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.297
Pages:
543-50
Synopsis:
This is the first study that investigates the effect of thymoquinone on the oxidant/antioxidant system in the irradiated tongue tissue of the rats.

ABSTRACT

Background: Head and neck cancer patients treated with radiotherapy suffer severe side effects during and following their treatment. Efforts to decrease toxicity of irradiation to normal tissue, organs and cells have led to searching for cytoprotective agent. Investigations for effective and non-toxic compounds with radioprotective capability led to increasing interest in antioxidant such as Thymoquinone (TQ).

Propolis and Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester Attenuates Nitrosative Stress in Lens Tissue in Radiation-induced Cataracts in Rats

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.445
Pages:
362-7
Synopsis:
The aim of this study was to investigate whether propolis and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) prevent radiation-induced cataractogenesis. The results obtained in the study suggest that propolis and CAPE have free radical, scavenging activities in the irradiation-induced cataractogenesis.

 ABSTRACT

Objective: Eye morbidity is widely observed in patients receiving total body irradiation prior to bone marrow transplantation or radiotherapy for ocular or head and neck cancers. Cataract blindness is the major cause of preventable blindness worldwide, especially in the developing countries. The aim of this study was to investigate whether propolis and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) prevent radiation-induced cataractogenesis.

The Radioprotective Effects of Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester and Thymoquinone on Oxidative and Nitrosative Stress in Liver Tissue of Rats Exposed to Total Head Irradiation

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.176
Pages:
1–7
Synopsis:
This study investigates the effects of the addition of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and thymoquinone on oxidative and nitrosative stress in the liver tissue of irradiated rats. Thymoquinone and CAPE decrease oxidative and nitrosative stress markers and have antioxidant effects, which also increase antioxidant capacity in the liver tissue of irradiated rats.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of addition of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and thymoquinone (TQ)on oxidative and nitrosative stress in the liver tissue of (IR) irradiated rats.

Methods: Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups to test the radioprotective effectiveness of TQand CAPE administered by intraperitoneal injection. Appropriate control groups were also studied.
