Evaluation of the Role of Palatal Rugae Application as a Tool for Sex Identification in the Saudi Population

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2015.552
Pages:
28–31
Synopsis:
Unknown person’s identification has always been a major challenge for forensic experts, especially when dealing with decomposed and mutilated corpses. Forensic odontology has proven that palatal rugae are preserved in such conditions and can be used for personal identification and sex determination.

Should a Study of Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance Be of Clinical Interest to Predict Myeloma Overcome?

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2015.423
Pages:
15–8
Synopsis:
Progression of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) to myeloma or malignant lymphoproliferation is 1% per year. In view of its frequency and prevalence in men of African descent, it will be of public health interest to determine risk factors for MGUS in the Caribbean

The Combined Effect of Hyperuricaemia and Overweight/Obesity on Risk of Hypertension in Adults

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2015.289
Pages:
10–4
Synopsis:
Hyperuricaemia and overweight/obesity are independent risk factors for hypertension; they increase the risk to a much greater extent when present together.

ABSTRACT

Background: While hyperuricaemia and overweight/obesity can act alone to increase the prevalence of hypertension, few studies have examined their combined effect.

Methods: This cross-sectional study of 42 332 Han Chinese from southwestern China investigated the combined effect of hyperuricaemia and overweight/obesity on risk of hypertension in the entire sample as well as in different genders and age groups.

Is There an Association between Vitamin D Level and Microvascular Complications of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus?

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2015.265
Pages:
138–41
Synopsis:
Although vitamin D deficiency is more common in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus than healthy subjects, no relationship between vitamin D deficiency and microvascular complications of diabetes was found in this study.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with impaired glucose tolerance and the development of Type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to compare the 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-vitamin D) levels between Type 2 diabetic patients with and without microvascular complications and healthy subjects to identify any possible associations with vitamin D levels and microvascular complications.

Parallel Assessment of Bone Mineral Density and RANKL/OPG Ratio in Saudi Females

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2014.312
Pages:
1–9
Synopsis:
This cross-sectional study was conducted to measure the bone mineral density of 499 apparently healthy Saudi females aged 20–65 years using quantitative ultrasound method. It was extended to measure blood receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) among participants and identify possible associated risk factors for osteopaenia or osteoporosis among them.

 ABSTRACT

Background:  Osteoporosis is a significant risk factor for morbidity, and its high prevalence among Saudi women should be considered to be a public health problem. Quantitative ultrasound was recommended for bone mineral density (BMD) screening. Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) and their ratio are critical for physiological bone remodelling, and related abnormalities may lead to several osteopathies.

Comparison of the Prevalences of Demodex folliculorum in Rosacea and Seborrhoeic Dermatitis with Standardized Skin Surface Biopsy

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2015.102
Pages:
127–32
Synopsis:
There is no comparative study in the literature regarding Demodex folliculorum prevalence in rosacea (RSC) and seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) using standardized skin surface biopsy. Our study showed that D folliculorum prevalance in RSC was three times higher than SD, and D folliculorum may play a more important role in the aetiopathogenesis of RSC than SD.

Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease: An Update

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2015.198
Pages:
133–7
Synopsis:
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is a common disorder in which reflux of stomach contents causes symptoms and/or complications and affects quality of life. Heartburn and regurgitation are the characteristic symptoms and diagnosis can be made with typical symptoms. Acid suppression is the mainstay of treatment.

A Bio-computing Analysis of the Resting-to-pulsed Conformational Changes in Cytochrome c Oxidase

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2015.090
Pages:
109–14
Synopsis:
Cytochrome c oxidase catalyses the reduction of oxygen to water at two vastly different rates determined by the prevailing conformation. We employed bio-computing to view the enzyme’s oxygen/ligand binding site but found no evidence that this site cycles between an opened and closed position as predicted by others.

Immunohistochemical Expression of Bcl-2 and Microvessel Density in Uterine Fibroids in Saudi Patients

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2015.038
Pages:
121–6
Synopsis:
Bcl-2 protein plays an important role in the growth of tumours through preventing the normal course of apoptotic cell death. CD34 is an indicator of the new vascularization of the lesion. Leiomyomata of Saudi patients expressed upgrading of Bcl-2 and proved the increased vascularity of this tumour as expressed by CD34.

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2015.161
Pages:
115–20
Synopsis:
Bronchial asthma is a common respiratory disease. This study aimed to explore the effect of 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) on the expression of interleukin-17 and -21 in asthma by establishing an asthma mice model.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the effect of 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) on the expression of interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-21 in asthma by establishing an asthma mice model.
