Thyroid Cancer in Children of Eastern Anatolia

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2014.144
Synopsis:
Iodine deficiency is likely to play a role in thyroid cancer. The use of iodized products such as salt, water, and bread should be provided to people who live in areas with endemic iodine deficiency.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The incidence of thyroid cancer has been increasing in recent years. In this study, the clinical and laboratory findings of 14 patients with thyroid cancer were analysed retrospectively. They were admitted to our clinic with complaints of swelling of the neck.

A Clinical and Pathological Analysis of 3722 Renal Biopsy Specimens from Adults with Primary Glomerular Disease in Shandong Province, China

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2014.114
Synopsis:
In this retrospective study over a six-year period, the main indication for renal biopsy was nephrotic syndrome, the most frequent form of primary glomerular diseases was IgA nephropathy, minimal change disease was the pathological type associated with a younger age group and membranous nephropathy had a significant percentage increase.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To determine the pattern of disease in adults with primary glomerular diseases (PGD) in the Shandong Province of China, to identify the clinical and renal pathology and to assess the relationship between these two factors.

Patterns of Ocular Trauma Presenting to the University Hospital of the West Indies in Jamaica

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2014.096
Synopsis:
This was a prospective, observational study done over a 14-month period on patients with ocular trauma referred to the Eye Unit. Eighty patients were recruited, 71.3% were males. The 18-35-year age group sustained 41.3% of the trauma. Males had an odds ratio risk of 1.37.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify the causes of ocular trauma, determine the groups at risk and types of injuries presenting to the Eye Unit at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

YY1-miR-146a-YY1 Regulatory Circuitry: A Potential Mechanism of Prostate Cancer Formation and Progression

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2013.314
Synopsis:
YY1, a critical regulator in prostate cancer, is predicted to be a direct target of miR-146a and binds to promoter region of miR-146a which demonstrates that YY1-miR-146a-YY1 regulatory circuitry may contribute to prostate cancer and serve as a future intervention target.

Echocardiography-guided Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation of Atrioventricular Node and VVI Pacemaker Implantation

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2013.317
Synopsis:
Radiofrequency catheter ablation of atrioventricular node and VVI pacemaker implantation under transthoracic echocardiography guidance is a safe, easy and feasible approach. This procedure could be an important supplemental measure to a catheter ablation of arrhythmia under routine X-ray fluoroscopy.

Autophagy Protects from Ventilator-induced Lung Injury Partly through Activation of Haem Oxygenase-1 Pathway

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2014.059
Synopsis:
Autophagy, partly through activation of haem oxygenase-1 (HO-1) pathway, may protect from ventilator-induced lung injury, which might be a new potential therapeutic target for ventilator-induced lung injury.

Effect of Early Intervention Applied to Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease at Different Stages

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2013.325
Synopsis:
Early intervention could slow the decline of FEV1 and FEV1/FVC in patients with chronic obstructive disease (COPD) at stages I and II, and thus delay the progression of early COPD and improve their quality of life.
ABSTRACT

Objective: Early intervention in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) includes health education, smoking cessation, pulmonary rehabilitation and enhancing immunity (administration of influenza vaccine and polysaccharide nucleic acid fraction of bacillus Calmette-Guerin [BCG-PSN]). The effect of early intervention was investigated systematically in patients with COPD at different stages.

Expression and Location of Glucose-regulated Protein 78 in Testis and Epididymis

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2013.259
Pages:
14–7
Synopsis:
GRP78 protein is widely present in human testis, epididymis and spermatozoa. Capacitation and acrosome reaction didn’t affect the location of GRP78. Positioning percentage and signal intensity of GRP78 on sperm were significant positive correlation with sperm progressive motility and vitality.
ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the role of glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78/BiP/HSPA5) in spermatogenesis and its expression and location in the testis and epididymis.
Methods: Immunohistochemistry and Western blot were used to detect GRP78 location and expression in the testis and epididymis.

Comparison of Needle Aspiration with Incision and Drainage for the Treatment of Peritonsillar Abscess

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2013.244
Pages:
11–3
Synopsis:
The complication rate and length of hospital stay are similar between the needle aspiration and the incision and drainage groups. However, needle aspiration was found to be superior to incision and drainage in terms of the post-procedure pain score for the patients. We suggest that needle aspiration can be performed as the first-line treatment of peritonsillar abscess.
ABSTRACT

Background: Peritonsillar abscess is a common clinical condition encountered in the practice of otolaryngology. However, there is no consensus yet in terms of best treatment of peritonsillar abscess. The current prospective clinical study was performed to compare two common treatments of peritonsillar abscess, namely, needle aspiration versus incision and drainage for peritonsillar abscess
