The staff in the Sanitation and Grounds Section includes two public health inspectors. In addition to developing and maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the Campus, this Section places emphasis on environmental health by way of its programmes/projects, which include food safety, vector/pest control, solid waste management, water quality control, waste water management, disease surveillance and disaster preparedness management.

This Unit manages a waste water treatment facility which serves the campus and the University Hospital of the west Indies (UHWI). Plans are currently being developed to upgrade the plant in order to accommodate the additional load imposed by new construction as well as to increase the efficiency of the treatment processes so that the facility can meet the national standards for effluent.

Strong inter-sectoral collaboration is maintained  with units such as UWI Health Centre, Projects Office, Safety and Emergency Management, Electrical and Building Sections, Human Resource Department, Security and other interest groups. The Department, on behalf of the the University, establishes linkages with related Government bodies and regulatory agencies e.g. Ministry of Health and National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA).
