Correlation of Left Ventricular Diastolic Function and Left Ventricular Geometry in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.054
Pages:
92–8
Synopsis:
Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is an independent risk factor of morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular diseases. In this study, there was significant correlation between the left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and changes in cardiac geometry in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation of the left ventricular diastolic function and the left ventricular geometry in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) by echocardiography.

Knowledge of and Attitudes toward Medical Professionalism among Students and Junior Doctors in Trinidad and Tobago

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/Wimj.2013.214
Pages:
138–44
Synopsis:
Medical students and junior doctors demonstrated limited knowledge about medical professionalism but good attitudes toward this trait; however, attitude scores declined over time. This may signal receptivity toward more formal training within this area.

ABSTRACT

Background: The past decade has seen an increasing focus on professionalism within the medical school curriculum. This reflects the growing demand for doctors who demonstrate empathy and uphold the altruistic values of the Hippocratic Oath.  Such is often challenged by the resource-constrained environments of developing nations requiring uniquely tailored interventions within these regions.

Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Children: The Role of Helicobacter pylori Infection and Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug Use

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.130
Pages:
113–6
Synopsis:
Helicobacter pylori infection and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug usage are frequent in children. They are considered risk factors for gastrointestinal bleeding. Ibuprofen and acetylsalicylic acid intake were found to be significant in the aetiology of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Helicobacter pylori was not found to be significant.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the role of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and Helicobacter pylori infection in the aetiology of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) in children.

Blunt Trauma in Paediatric Patients – Experience from a Small Centre

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.069
Pages:
126–30
Synopsis:
This study sought to determine the incidence, aetiology, grades of abdominal organ injuries, diagnosis, management and outcome of blunt abdominal trauma in a paediatric population. Conservative treatment was appropriate for all stable patients with blunt abdominal trauma regardless of organ injury grade. The choice of non-operative treatment should be based predominantly on physiological response.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Despite great prevention efforts, blunt abdominal trauma still remains a leading cause of injury, especially in the paediatric population. Abdominal trauma is the main culprit of serious children’s injury and the most common area of initially missed diagnosis with a fatal outcome.

Effects of General-epidural Anaesthesia on the Haemodynamics in Patients with Myasthenia Gravis

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.054
Pages:
99–103
Synopsis:
General-epidural anaesthesia can stabilize perioperative haemodynamics, reduce the consumption of general anaesthesia and simultaneously shorten extubation time, indicating that it is a feasible and ideal anaesthetic method at present.

 ABSTRACT

Objective: The current study aims to explore the effects of general-epidural anaesthesia (GEA) on the perioperative haemodynamics in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG), as well as their extubation time.

Previously Activated Psoralen: A Possible Novel Format of Psoralen Used in the Treatment of Graft-versus-host Disease

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.166
Pages:
135–7
Synopsis:
Psoralen was utilized in the treatment of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), in a complicated and expensive process known as extracorporeal photochemotherapy. We hypothesized that previously activated psoralen may be a novel treatment for GVHD and is much easier and economical to operate.

Effect of Submaximal Warm-up Exercise on Exercise-induced Asthma in African School Children

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2011.222
Pages:
117–25
Synopsis:
This study reports the effect of warm-up exercise on exercise-induced asthma (EIA) and highlights the need to screen school children for EIA. There was a high prevalence of EIA among the school children in this study. Exercise after warm-up was significant in reducing EIA.

Evaluation of Interleukin-10 Levels in Patients Diagnosed with Chronic Hepatitis

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.154
Pages:
71–5
Synopsis:
Interleukin 10 (IL-10) is a cytokine which has anti-inflammatory characteristics. In this study, we evaluated whether IL-10 levels increase when hepatitis B virus DNA levels increase. High levels of IL-10 in chronic hepatitis B patients indicate that it may be the cause of ineffective immune response. Decreasing IL-10 levels by using various methods may have important contributions in progression and treatment of the disease.

ABSTRACT

Objective: One of the most important factors playing a role in chronic hepatitis B pathogenesis is cytokine release and one of the cytokines with anti-inflammatory characteristic is interleukin-10 (IL-10). The aim of the present study is to examine IL-10 levels in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

A Study of Patients with “Interface Respiratory Failure” Due to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.028
Pages:
81–6
Synopsis:
The definition of interface respiratory failure is scientific and its width is appropriate. We should avoid progression from “interface respiratory failure” to “real respiratory failure”. Interventions should focus on oxygen therapy, bronchodilators, improving respiratory compliance, cytokines and anti-infective agents, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explain a definition of “interface respiratory failure” as arterial blood gas assay with arterial oxygen partial pressure in the range of 60-75 mmHg.

An Examination of the Effects of Leuprolide Acetate Used in the Treatment of Central Precocious Puberty on Bone Mineral Density and 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.346
Pages:
104–7
Synopsis:
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists may have an adverse effect on bone health. They may exhibit these effects by impacting on vitamin D levels.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Leuprolide acetate is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogue frequently used in the treatment of central precocious puberty. Research is currently taking place into its effects on endocrine systems. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of leuprolide acetate on vitamin D and bone mineral density.
