Time-dependent Degradation Pattern of Cardiac Troponin T in Cases of Death by Burn

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.232
Pages:
226–9
Synopsis:
We investigated time-dependent alterations in cardiac troponin T associated with fatal burns. In such cases, this knowledge will assist in knowing if there were previous scars that might have mimicked a burn and also help to properly evaluate the real cause of death.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Death due to burn occurs frequently. This study investigated time-dependent alterations in cardiac troponin T (cTnT) associated with fatal burns.

Impact of L-carnitine and Selenium Treatment on Testicular Apoptosis in Rats Exposed to 2.45 GHz Microwave Energy

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.205
Pages:
55–61
Synopsis:
Electromagnetic radiation by wireless device (2.45 GHz) induces testicular apoptosis. Effects of supplemental selenium and L-carnitine on testicular apoptosis by 2.45 GHz microwave energy were evaluated.

ABSTRACT

Objective: It has been suggested that electromagnetic radiation (EMR) by wireless devices (2.45 GHz) induces testicular apoptosis. We investigated if supplemental selenium (Se) and L-carnitine may reduce this adverse effect.

Ascites in Ovarian Carcinoma – Reliability and Limitations of Cytological Analysis

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.230
Pages:
236–40
Synopsis:
Peritoneal cytology of ascitic fluid is highly specific but has relatively low sensitivity, particularly in case of endometrioid ovarian carcinoma. In order to increase sensitivity, peritoneal cytology should be combined with monoclonal antibodies and other biochemical and immunohistochemical markers.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The objectives of this study were to examine the validity of ascitic fluid cytology in the detection of pathological findings, to examine the percentage of false positive and false negative results in the cytology of ascitic fluid and to determine the validity of peritoneal cytology in relation to the histopathological type of the ovarian tumour.

The Male-female Birth Ratio in California and the 1992 April Riots in Los Angeles

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.338
Pages:
223–5
Synopsis:
Stress induces spontaneous abortions that affect male fetuses more than female fetuses. The April 1992 Los Angeles riots constituted six days of civil unrest. This study showed that male births in California State dipped following this event.

Satisfaction Level of New Mothers with Prenatal Care and the Healthcare Professionals Who Provide It

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.388
Pages:
732–8
Synopsis:
Prenatal care is a key strategy to reduce maternal mortality. Therefore, it is important to ascertain the level of satisfaction of new mothers with their pregnancy monitoring and with the medical professionals who provided prenatal care.

Introduction: Prenatal care is a key strategy to reduce maternal mortality. The aims of this work were to ascertain the level of satisfaction of new mothers with their pregnancy monitoring and with the medical professionals who provided prenatal care.

Effects of Preoperative Clarithromycin Administration in Patients with Nasal Polyposis

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.313
Pages:
721–7
Synopsis:
Macrolide antibiotics are known to have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects in treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis. In this prospective study, we investigated the effects of preoperative long-term, low-dose clarithromycin use on symptoms and endoscopic findings in patients with nasal polyposis.

Objective: In recent years, various investigators have shown considerable interest for use of macrolide antibiotics in treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical effects of preoperative long-term, low-dose clarithromycin administration in patients with nasal polyposis.

Emergency Department Deaths in a Nigerian University Hospital: Deaths Too Many

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.281
Pages:
131–4
Synopsis:
The emergency department operates on a 24-hour basis for the acute care of patients without prior appointment and who require timely intervention for time-sensitive illnesses and injuries. This audit of deaths is used as a measure of the quality of care.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: We reviewed the demographic pattern and distribution of deaths in the emergency department (ED) of the University College Hospital (UCH) in order to identify gaps in the standard of care, thereby providing evidence for intervention and enhanced research in acute care.

Ultrasonographic Measurement of the Femoral Cartilage Thickness in Patients with Behçet’s Disease

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.337
Pages:
728–31
Synopsis:
In this study, the femoral cartilage thickness of patients with Behçet’s disease (BD) was evaluated and it was found that the cartilage was thinner in patients with BD and that arthritis seems to be associated with this decrease.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate femoral cartilage thickness in patients with Behçet’s disease (BD) by using ultrasonography.

Penile Carcinoma in Northern Trinidad and Tobago

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.303
Pages:
571–4
Synopsis:
The incidence of penile carcinoma in Trinidad and Tobago is low and has halved in the past two decades. It stands at 0.6 cases per 100 000 males; the peak age group is 41–50 years and 95% of cases occur between 41 and 80 years. The decreasing incidence may be attributed to better hygiene, a higher rate of circumcision and low human papillomavirus rates in this population.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the current incidence as well as general and ethnic trends of penile carcinoma in northern Trinidad and Tobago.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on all cases of penile carcinoma presenting in north and east Trinidad, as well as Tobago over an eight-year period.
