Predicting Osteopenia and Osteoporosis with a Simple Test: A Preliminary Work

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.253
Pages:
158–64
Synopsis:
Use of simple serum based tests to classify healthy individuals from patients with osteopenia/osteoporosis is gaining interest. It seems that the “Osteo-Pars” equation has reasonable benefit in discriminating healthy individuals from osteopenia/osteoporosis patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The occurrence of osteopenia and osteoporosis is a major problem of ageing. For assessing the severity of bone loss, bone mineral density (BMD) measurement is the gold standard. Because of the limitations of BMD, use of simpler serum-based tests to classify osteoporosis/osteopenia patients is gaining interest. In this preliminary work, we aimed to discriminate between healthy individuals and osteoporosis/osteopenia patients through a simple serum-based equation.

Can Mean Platelet Volume Be a Surrogate Marker of Inflammation in Rheumatic Diseases?

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.202
Pages:
165–9
Synopsis:
It has been suggested that low-level mean platelet volume (MPV) in humans may be related to secondary thrombosis due to inflammation. For this reason, MPV can be used as a marker showing inflammation in the body. In this study, we found a strong association between MPV and erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein in patients with rheumatic diseases. Thus, MPV may be used as a negative acute-phase reactant in rheumatic diseases.

ABSTRACT

Background: In humans, it has been suggested that low-level mean platelet volume (MPV) may be related to secondary thrombosis due to inflammation. For this reason, MPV can be used as a marker showing inflammation in the body.

Evaluation of Nutritional Biochemical Parameters in Haemodialysis Patients Over a Ten-year Period

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.117
Pages:
213–7
Synopsis:
This study evaluated the nutritional status of haemodialysis patients by assessing biochemical and anthropometric parameters. The prevalence of malnutrition in haemodialysis patients was evident; however, the results showed that the nutritional deterioration of these patients was mainly reflected in their biochemical parameters rather than in their anthropometric measurements.

Beta Cell Regenerating Potential of Azadirachta indica (Neem) Extract in Diabetic Rats

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.224
Pages:
13–17
Synopsis:
Neem leaf extract improved β cell regeneration but did not reduce blood glucose in diabetic rats.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study evaluated the ability of 0.8% neem leaf extract (NLE) to treat diabetes mellitus by assessing its effects on blood glucose, insulin levels and islet morphology in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats.

Status of Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Levels in Smokers with Breast Cancer from Western Nepal

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.078
Synopsis:
The blood glucose lowering potential of aqueous fruit extracts of the Jamaican plant species (Momordica charantia) was investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats. The extract showed no hypoglycaemic or antidiabetic activity. However, there was improvement in glucose tolerance of glucose-primed normoglycaemic rats during oral glucose tolerance test.

Objectives: Research indicates that oxidative stress induced by smoking plays a crucial role in breast cancer. In view of these reports, we aimed to study this relationship between smoking and oxidative stress in breast cancer patients from western region of Nepal.

Confidence in Prescription Writing among Junior Physicians in Trinidad and Tobago

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.087
Pages:
407–12
Synopsis:
This research aimed to estimate the percentage of newly registered medical officers who reported confidence in writing prescriptions. Most recent medical graduates felt confident about their prescription writing, but there is a need to objectively measure this ability.

ABSTRACT

Background: A fundamental skill in the practice of medicine is the ability to safely and rationally prescribe drugs. This research aims to estimate the percentage of newly registered medical officers who reported confidence in writing prescriptions.

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.084
Pages:
201–8
Synopsis:
This study estimated the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among patients of the University Hospital of the West Indies diabetes clinic in Jamaica and evaluated the proportion of patients at high risk for adverse outcomes. Approximately 86% of patients had CKD and 70% were at high risk for adverse outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among patients attending the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) Diabetes Clinic and to determine the proportion of patients at high risk for adverse outcomes.

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.118
Pages:
344–50
Synopsis:
Retrospective epidemiological data were used to characterize the frequency, incidence and severity of dengue fever and to identify clusters of disease in Suriname. The results illustrate the need to identify risk factors that influence the transmission of dengue in Suriname.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To characterize the frequency, incidence and severity of dengue fever in Suriname and to detect historic clusters of disease by integrating epidemiological data into a spatial visualization platform.
