Membership and Loan

 

Membership

 

All registered undergraduate and graduate students, Mona Administrative and Technical (MONATS),  academic, research and senior administrative staff of the University of the West Indies are members of the University Library, (the Main, Law, Medical, Western Jamaica Campus and Science Branch Libraries) and have access to its services.

Persons enrolled in other tertiary institutions such as the Edna Manley College for the Visual and the Performing Arts and MICO University College, who are pursuing joint UWI courses and students from the Schools of Physiotherapy and Radiography are registered as undergraduates.

UWI Alumni

 

Members of the UWI guild of graduates have reading and reference services as well as access to electronic resources upon presenatation of their valid alumni membership card.

  • Periodicals are available on loan only to graduate students, academic and research staff.
  • Current periodical issues cannot be borrowed until they have been in the Library for one month or have been superseded by a later issue.

The following materials may not be taken out of the Library:

  • Reference books
  • Newspapers
  • Theses
  • West Indian and Special Collections
  • Government serials/UN collections documents
  • World Bank's Caribbean Public Information material

Renewals

Open Shelf Items may be renewed for a further loan period provided these have not been requested by another reader.

Fines 

Fines begin to accrue if a borrowed item is not returned by the due date.  The existing rates are:

  • RBC overnight loan   -     $50.00  per day
  • RBC 3-hour loan       -     $20.00  per hour
  • Open-shelf              -      $10.00 per day

Lost and Found

As a courtesy to our patrons, personal items found in the Library are held for pick up at the Circulation desks in the Main and Branch Libraries.

Security

  • A valid UWI ID is required for entry into the Library.  The presentation of the ID is a security measure which prevents undue delay in gaining entry.
  • Removal of any material from the Library must be properly authorized. All readers leaving the Library must show at the exit point all materials in their possession and may be required to open for inspection any receptacle carried out of the Library. Unauthorized removal of material shall constitute a serious offence.
  • All bags, brief cases, parcels, (including five star folders) must be left at the bag check-in at the front of the Library, but the University accepts no responsibility for the loss or damage to any article left and users are reminded not to leave valuable items in items left.
  • Patrons are required to secure laptops, other equipment and books brought into or borrowed from the Library.
  • Laptop bags and sleeves are not allowed in the Library.  Patrons may access transparent bags at the circulation desk to carry laptop and other valuables while in the Library.


The following are prohibited:

  • Smoking
  • Food or drink
  • Use of cellular phones

 And remember ... be considerate of other users especially in shared and communal spaces.
