A Descriptive Study of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Tertiary Care Clinics of a Caribbean Island

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2018.125
Pages:
304-11
Synopsis:
Patients with more severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are more likely to have worse quality of life, higher BODE quartile and more exacerbations. A link, not hitherto acknowledged in West Indian patients, between COPD severity and depression is explored. The study shows for the first time a relation between the BODE index and low socio-economic status. The study recommends that all tertiary care patients with COPD should have regular vaccination, depression and six-minute walk assessment, and that health education in COPD should be aimed at those of low socio-economic status in particular.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the relationship between severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and quality of life as well as COPD’s correlation with depressive symptoms in West Indian subjects.

Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) Risk Score as a Predictor of In-hospital Mortality for Acute Coronary Syndrome in Trinidad and Tobago

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.172
Pages:
52–9
Synopsis:
The GRACE risk score, which was developed in a predominantly Caucasian population, was not previously tested in a Caribbean population. This study found it to be a reliable predictor of in-hospital mortality in a multi-ethnic Trinidadian acute coronary syndrome population, making it a useful risk stratification tool.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine whether risk stratification using the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) risk score is a predictor of in-hospital mortality for ACS patients in a multi-ethnic Caribbean population.

Five Year Follow-up of Patients Treated with Imatinib Mesylate for Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia in Trinidad and Tobago

Issue:
Pages:
298–302
Synopsis:
The delivery of quality pharmacy services is thought to be important by virtue of its influence on patient’s satisfaction and hence better patient compliance/adherence. This study explores the relationship between patient’s satisfaction with pharmacy services and control of selected chronic diseases. General Hospital is presented. Efficacy, safety and tolerability seem comparable to that reported in developed countries.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Data on the use of Imatinib (IM) in developing countries remain limited. A retrospective study was done to assess the efficacy and toxicity of IM in treating chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) in Trinidad and Tobago.

A Preliminary Investigation of Periodontal Disease and Diabetes in Trinidad

Issue:
Pages:
86–90
Synopsis:
A preliminary report on the dental evaluation of diabetic patients suggests that periodontal disease may be quite prevalent in diabetic patients in Trinidad. Collaborative patient care between medical and dental practitioners should form part of the routine management of diabetic patients.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To describe periodontal disease status in diabetic patients in Trinidad.

Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Patients attending a tertiary referral centre for diabetes at an out-patient clinic were invited to undergo oral examinations. The basic periodontal examination (BPE) was used to assess periodontal disease status.

Audit of Sudden Deaths in the Accident and Emergency Department of a Tertiary Hospital in Trinidad and Tobago

Issue:
Pages:
61–7
Synopsis:
Sudden deaths in an accident and emergency department in Trinidad and Tobago were examined. The majority of deaths were cardiovascular, followed by trauma.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the proportion of deaths due to confirmed myocardial infarction (CMI) and the aetiology of sudden death at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital (A&E) department for January to June 2008.

Methods: This retrospective study utilized the death register to determine the number of A&E deaths for the study period. Patients dying from MI were investigated using records to obtain ECG and postmortem reports.

Obstructive Lung Disease in Acute Medical Patients

Issue:
Pages:
7–13
Synopsis:
The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in acute hospital admissions is 20.9% with 11.7% of admissions having chronic symptoms with normal spirometry. There was significant co-morbidity with vascular disease.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To determine the proportion of adult medical patients who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), using the Global initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease guidelines (GOLD), and its relation to vascular disease.

Methods: This is a prospective cross-sectional study of adult patients admitted to acute medical wards. Interviewer administered questionnaire, anthropometric and spirometric measurements were done.
