Synopsis:

Gestational age and female gender were found to be independent predictors of mortality in extremely low birthweight infants. Obstetric measures for the prevention of preterm delivery need to be optimized in order to decrease the morbidity and mortality associated with extremely low birthweight infants.

Objective: To describe the early outcome of extremely low birthweight infants delivered at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

A retrospective analysis of outpatients with heart failure revealed rates of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor and β blocker use similar to those achieved in recent randomized trials. Short-term survival was high.

ABSTRACT

Background: Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated improvement in mortality with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), β blockers and aldosterone antagonists. The use of these lifesaving
treatments remain inadequate.

Aim: To determine the clinical features, aetiology, treatment and short-term survival of heart failure in a cardiology private practice in Jamaica.

Diabetic Foot Complications among Patients Attending a Specialist Diabetes Clinic in Jamaica: Prevalence and Associated Factors

Synopsis:

This study estimated the prevalence of diabetic foot complications among patients of a specialist diabetes clinic in Jamaica and evaluated factors associated with foot complications. Approximately one of every eight patients had a major foot complication (amputation, ulcer or infection). Associated factors were neuropathy, high blood pressure and longer duration of diabetes.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity among primary school children in Jamaica is 10.6% and 7.1%, respectively, with girls having higher rates than boys. Children who attend private and urban-public schools have higher rates than children who attend rural-public schools.

Synopsis:

A third of Jamaicans report sexual practices that increase their risk of HIV infection. High-risk sexual behaviour was more common among men and younger persons, but was not infrequent among older persons. Being married, active religious practice and weekly attendance at religious meetings were associated with lower odds of high risk sexual behaviour.
