Plasma Cellular Hypoxia, Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Disease Risk and Prognostic Factors in Type 2 Diabetic Patients in Saudi Arabia

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.117
Pages:
262-73
Synopsis:
This study investigated the level of plasma hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α and cytochrome c (CytoC) in correlation with C-reactive protein, dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance, and prognostic factors in Type 2 diabetic patients in Saudi Arabia. Reduced level of HIF-1α and non-significant increased level of CytoC correlated negatively with these prognostic factors. These results pointed to a possible pathogenetic implication for HIF-1α.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This cross-sectional study evaluated the association of plasma cytochrome c (CytoC) and hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α, as mitochondrial dysfunction and cellular hypoxia biomarkers, with disease risk factors and prognosis in Type 2 diabetic patients in Saudi Arabia.

Effect Observation of Persistent Family Rehabilitation Guidance for the Elderly after Hip Re-fracture Surgery

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.064
Pages:
Synopsis:
Due to aging of population, number of elderly hip fracture incidence gradually increases, with an average growth rate of 1% to 3% per year, resulting in a serious impact on health of the elderly. The study was designed to explore effect of persistent family rehabilitation guidance on the elderly after hip re-fracture surgery.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore effect of persistent family rehabilitation guidance on the elderly after hip re-fracture surgery.

Methods: Conclude specific methods of persistent family rehabilitation guidance for elderly patients with hip re-fracture, observe patients’ hip joint function score, understanding towards rehabilitation knowledge and other indicators.

Sonoelastographic Assessment of the Gender-related Changes of Achilles the Tendon

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.501
Pages:
628-32
Synopsis:
In this study, the effect of gender on the Achilles tendon’s elastic property is not a significant covariable in the young, healthy sample. Muscle strength may play a more important role in the Achilles tendon’s injury rather than in tendon’s elasticity.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the gender-related differences in the elasticity and thickness of the Achilles tendon among healthy young participants.

Methods: A total of 48 volunteers, who were healthy adults between the ages of 20 and 25 years, were included in this study. The metabolic equivalent (MET) scores, tendon thickness and shear wave velocities (SWVs) were compared between the males and females.
