Decreased Thiol Levels, Increased Disulphide Levels Are Associated with Increased Blood Glucose Levels in Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.590
Synopsis:
This study examined the thiol/disulphide balance in patients with newly diagnosed T2DM using a newly developed technique. The thiol/disulphide balance, an important marker of oxidative stress, altered towards a decrease in thiol and an increase in disulphide in the newly diagnosed T2DM patient group.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relation between newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes and the thiol/disulfide balance, used as a marker of oxidative stress, by measuring that exchange using a novel technique.

2:1 Block with Wenckebach Mechanism in Children due to Different Etiologies

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.577
Pages:
22-4
Synopsis:
Our results suggest that the clues indicating a Wenckebach mechanism in children with 2:1 atrioventricular block (2:1 AVB) can be obtained by noninvasive techniques. In children with sustained 2:1 AVB intracardiac electrophysiological study can help in the differentiation, and the prognosis seems good.

ABSTRACT

Objective: In children, 2:1 atrioventricular block (AVB) with Wenckebach mechanism is a rare entity.

Methods: In seven children, 2:1 AVB with Wenckebach mechanism was detected. The clinical features of these children were retrospectively evaluated.

Estimated Effects of Climate Variables on Transmission of Malaria, Dengue and Leptospirosis within Georgetown, Guyana

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.118
Pages:
42-6
Synopsis:
The study suggests a connection between climate variables and vector-borne disease. The study showed a positive correlation between climate variables and vector-borne diseases like malaria, leptospirosis, and dengue.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyse meteorological data (temperature, rainfall and relative humidity) and vector-borne diseases (malaria, dengue and leptospirosis) to determine trends that may exist between and among variables within the Georgetown area.

The Thickness of Epicardial Adipose Tissue Adjacent to the Right Coronary Artery Predicts Recurrence of Atrial Fibrillation After Cryoballoon Ablation: A Simpler Method

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.070
Pages:
1-6
Synopsis:

Dementia among Older Persons in Jamaica: Prevalence and Policy Implications

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.133
Pages:
1-8
Synopsis:
This paper described the prevalence of dementia in the ageing Jamaican population. There are service and policy implications given the increasing importance of providing health and social services for persons with dementia.

ABSTRACT

Expressions of MicroRNA of Mixed Cellularity Hodgkin Lymphomas are Different in Paediatric and Adult Patients

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.504
Pages:
565-70
Synopsis:
This study evaluated the importance of microRNA in classical mixed cellularity Hodgkin lymphoma (MCHL) pathogenesis. We thought that microRNAs may play an important role in the biology of paediatric MCHL and may be useful in developing therapies targeting microRNAs.

ABSTRACT

Objective: MicroRNAs represent an emerging class of small non-coding RNAs that play important roles in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. This study was aimed to evaluate the relevance of microRNA in classical mixed cellularity Hodgkin lymphoma (MCHL) pathogenesis.

What is the Diagnostic Role of Adenoid Hypertrophy and Adult-Onset Otitis Media with Effusion in Clinically Asymptomatic Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma?

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.098
Pages:
19-23
Synopsis:
We aimed to investigate the validity, in adult patients, of adenoid hypertrophy with/without synchronous otitis media with effusion, in absence of other clinical symptoms and radiologic findings, to arouse suspicion of nasopharyngeal malignancy.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To verify the role of adenoid hypertrophy (AH) and otitis media with effusion (OME) in adult patients, in relation to the diagnosis of clinically asymptomatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).

Correlation Study of Insulin Resistance and Adipocytes Factors in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.382
Synopsis:
The aim of this study was to investigate the insulin resistance and adipocytes factors in patients with Type 2 diabetes. The results of stepwise regression analysis showed that resistin, TNF-α and FFA were significantly associated with insulin resistance index (IRI).

ABSTRACT

Objective: Thirty cases of non-obese patients with type 2 diabetes, 30 cases of obese patients with type 2 diabetes and 30 cases of healthy controls were selected to detect the levels of serum resistin, TNF-α, FFA, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, total cholesterol and triglycerides.

An Assessment of the Accuracy of Creatinine Measurements in Guyana

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.518
Pages:
4-8
Synopsis:
The accuracy of creatinine measurements in 16 Guyanese medical laboratories was assessed using blinded creatinine reference specimens. Creatinine methods in use in Guyana demonstrated imprecision and bias such that routine reporting of estimated glomerular filtration rates cannot be recommended at this time.

ABSTRACT

Background: The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is relatively high in Guyana. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) reporting allows for early-stage CKD identification when therapeutic interventions can prevent CKD progression. Accurate creatinine measurements are essential for valid eGFR calculations.

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.080
Synopsis:
We compared the clinical course and outcomes for the patients admitted for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) who smoked tobacco and marijuana versus tobacco only. The results showed earlier onset of advanced COPD with more frequent progression to cor pulmonale and death in tobacco and marijuana smokers.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To compare clinical course and outcomes in patients admitted for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) who smoke tobacco plus marijuana versus tobacco only.
