Damage Index in 110 Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients

Synopsis:

This study determined damage in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus using Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology (SLICC/ACR) damage index. Musculoskeletal system and osteoporosis were the most common manifestations of damage index in our patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the prevalence of Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology (SLICC/ACR) damage index among systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and to investigate the prevalence of each component of SLICC/ACR damage index.

Surgical Management of Renal Cell Carcinoma with Inferior Vena Cava Tumour Thrombus

Synopsis:

Surgical techniques for the management of renal cell carcinoma have undertaken numerous modifications in order to minimize trauma, facilitate complete removal of tumours and promote long-term survival. Recently, minimally invasive approaches have been developed and successfully applied in the patients. As a result, patients’ survival has been considerably improved.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Renal cell carcinoma with tumor thrombus involving the inferior vena cava is a refractory condition, on which debates remain in terms of choices of surgical treatment as well as survival. This article aims to present the recent development of the surgical management and the prognosis of this condition.

Using the HIV Treatment Cascade to Identify Implementation Gaps in Hypertension Management in Jamaica

Synopsis:

Hypertension is the single most important determinant of cardiovascular disease in the Caribbean. Applying the HIV treatment cascade to hypertension management helps highlight important hypertension research, treatment, and implementation gaps and can facilitate evaluation of the effectiveness of any interventions.

Family Structure, Parental Monitoring and Marijuana Use among Adolescents in Jamaica: Findings from Nationally Representative Data

Synopsis:

This study analysed the role of the family as a determinant of marijuana use among the Jamaican secondary school population. Results demonstrated that parental involvement carried more weight in influencing marijuana use than family structure and gender which showed no significant difference.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Marijuana misuse by adolescents is a social and public mental health problem in Jamaica and globally. Research has suggested that family structure is one of the factors that influences adolescents’ consumption of marijuana. This study was undertaken to determine if family structure and parental monitoring had any association with marijuana use among adolescents in Jamaica.

The hydro-alcoholic extract of the leaves of Prosopis farcta was evaluated for hepatoprotective and antioxidant activities in rats submitted to a high-fat diet. Oral administration of extract of Prosopis farcta leaves resulted in significant amelioration of the altered indices.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine whether phase contrast microscopy of uncentrifuged urine specimens could rapidly and accurately identify bacteriuria and predict microbiology culture results.

Methods: A prospective study was performed at the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory of the EWMSC, Trinidad. Urine samples were examined via phase contrast microscopy at the time of culture.

Not enough research has been conducted on the factors influencing physical activity participation in Jamaica. This study examined factors (social support, exercise barriers, and benefits) associated with physical activity level in Jamaicans with cardiovascular disease.

Objective: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in Jamaica. Physical activity (PA) participation has positive effects on some risk factors for CVD. Despite this, many remain physically inactive. This study examined factors (social support, exercise barriers and benefits) associated with PA level in Jamaicans with CVD.

This paper reviews the use of deterministic compartmental models in epidemiology and the usefulness of the basic reproduction number and contact rate and their relationship to disease eradication. The construction of the three compartment [SIR] model is examined and its mathematical description and underlying assumptions discussed. The application of the derived variables to common diseases is discussed.

The aim of the study was to determine whether perception of risk and accessibility of cannabis predicted the age of initiation of cannabis among secondary school students in Jamaica. Whereas there was a significant inverse association between grade level in school and age of initiation, perceptions of access did not predict the age of initiation of cannabis.

Associations between Cannabis Use and Multiple Substance Use among High School Students in Jamaica

Synopsis:

Based on the data analysed from the National Secondary School Survey 2013, Jamaica, lifetime cannabis use was significantly associated with multiple substance use and was shown to be a risk factor for lifetime use of cigarettes and alcohol. However, adolescents who reported recent (past-month) use of cannabis were less likely to report recent use of alcohol and cigarettes.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Cigarettes, alcohol, cannabis, inhalants and cocaine are the most commonly used substances among high school students in Jamaica. However, there is limited evidence on their co-use and whether the use of one drug predicts the use of the others (multiple substance use). This study aimed to determine whether cannabis use predicts the co-use of the other substances.
