About Us

The Mona Information Literacy Unit (MILU) was established in January 2001 to coordinate all instruction/teaching in the Library, as well as building and expanding on the previous user education programmes to include critical thinking, evaluative transferable skills that are part of lifelong learning. Information Literacy is built on the premise of a collaborative approach where faculty, librarians and administrators work together to ensure that the critical thinking competencies are included in the curriculum at all levels.

Mission

The mission of the Mona Information Literacy Unit is to ensure that all students are equipped with the necessary IL competencies to empower them to become lifelong learners, bearing in mind the graduate attributes articulated by the University’s Administration. It is hoped that the library’s Information Literacy Programme will support the directions of the University as a student-centred campus and the development of a cadre of librarians and other library staff who will:

  • assist in the creation of teaching modules and courses, online as well as face to face in consultation with faculty.
  • promote the programmes across campus.
  • conduct teaching/instruction sessions on an incremental basis, as well as
  • continually assess and evaluate the programmes.

Teaching will be done with up to date and relevant equipment and resources.

Goals

  • Adopt an Information Literacy Policy that will include specific student learning outcomes.
  • Promote IL across the campus
  • Increase and develop a cadre of staff including teaching librarians to successfully carry out the mission of the unit.
  • Expand instruction opportunities for information skills for both students and faculty.
  • Expand the number of collaborative sessions and thereby strengthen information competencies of students
  • Design and create additional instruction programmes including online self-paced modules
  • Develop comprehensive resource material, equipment and teaching space.
