Content of Training Sessions

You may contact a department liaison librarian to decide on the contents or outcomes of a training session.

·    Library Tour

Emphasis will be placed on the physical outlay of the library and its collections; general information (library hours, membership, access) as well as services (lending, short loan, inter- library loans and information services).  An introduction to relevant reference work may also be given.

·    Introduction to the Library’s Homepage

Training provided in an electronic training room with Internet connectivity.

·    Development of an Effective Search Strategy

Identifying the important elements of a topic, then translating that into an effective search statement that replicate the key elements of a subject.

·    Reference Techniques

How to write references for published and unpublished sources, e-resources and web sources according to style manuals as well as departmental instructions and guidelines.

·    Catalogue Searching

How to search for books, theses, reports journal titles according to  keywords, authors, title, subject headings and call numbers; identify elements necessary to cite sources correctly.

·    Data bases and Journal Articles

How to select  and use appropriate search strategies; databases;  and evaluate results; full text articles and scholarly peer reviewed articles; How to find a journal article with just the biographic reference; SFX-links; multiple concurrent searches in different databases using library software MetaLib; How to avoid plagiarism and to use the correct reference techniques.

·    Training on OurVLE

A library module on how to find information for a specific assignment. Such a module can consist of a list of recommended reference works {also electronic};Recommended keywords to use in the catalogue and subject specific journal databases; Power Point slides with examples on how to use a databases; guide to use the catalogue; how to avoid plagiarism and the correct reference techniques

·    Training on how to find research material on the world wide web

May consist of the following: subject search engines  e.g. Google Scholar; Mamma;       
Vivisimo; repositories, directories and RSS feeds

·    Electronic  training programmes
