Preservation and Conservation

Mission

The primary purpose of the Preservation Unit is to preserve, protect and extend the usable life of the UWI, Mona Library Collections. The Unit pursues this objective in accordance with the mission and goals of the University and the Library 

Operations

The Unit assumes the responsibilty of directing and coordinating the preservation programme of the Library.  The programme is designed to prolong the existence and accessibility of the collection for current and future use.  This is achieved by preventing or further retarding the deterioration of the physical material through:

  • proper care and handling
  • ensuring appropriate environmental conditions
  • disaster planning and preparation
  • staff and user education
  • binding and repairing of material
  • conservation treatment
  • re-formatting of materials to protect their intellectual content
