Roger Mais Papers

 
The Roger Mais Collection was acquired in June 1966. The Collection consists of manuscripts for short stories and plays, notebooks, correspondence, and four paintings most of which were produced in the period from 1935 to 1955. Memoirs, interviews and reviews of his works are also avialable.

Roger Mais was a Jamaican, journalist, novelist, poet, and playwright. He wrote several short stories and articles for local newspapers. His themes focused largely on social injustice and inequality. The Collection provides a literary record of a period in where West Indian literary tradition was established with the awakening that accompanied the rise of nationalism in the English-speaking Caribbean. Roger Mais is recognized as one of the icons of this era and West Indian fiction. This Collection has been listed in the Caribbean Database of Documentary Heritage.
