A Study of the Association between Diabetes Mellitus and Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.236
Pages:
108–14
Synopsis:
The present study was designed to evaluate the relationship between HBV infection and type 2 diabetes mellitus first time from Pakistan and found that HBV infection did not enhance the risk of diabetes despite the significant differences in the biochemical parameters among the study's sample.

ABSTRACT

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and diabetes mellitus are major health problems associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The published literature suggests an association of diabetes mellitus with liver disease. However, the role of HBV infection in diabetes aetiology is still controversial. The present study was conducted to explore the veracity of this enigmatic association among Pakistani subjects.

Effect of Linagliptin versus Metformin on Insulin Secretion, Insulin Sensitivity and Glucose Control in Subjects with Impaired Glucose Tolerance

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.586
Pages:
149–153
Synopsis:
In impaired glucose tolerance patients, administration of linagliptin during three months decreased glucose levels at 90 and 120 minutes after a 75-g oral dextrose load and area under the curve of glucose, meanwhile metformin just decreased insulin at 0 minutes.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To evaluate the effect of linagliptin vs. metformin on insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity and glucose control in patients with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).

Co-morbidities, Metabolic and Malignancy Risk Profile in Patients with Psoriasis

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.454
Synopsis:
Advances in the knowledge of psoriasis and comorbidities have discovered common physiopathologic mechanisms which may provide biological plausibility of associations and explain why such disorders are more frequently seen in these patients. A PubMed and Embase searches were performed for comorbidities psoriasis, limits January 1990 to December 2012.

Evaluation of Garlic-Lemon Therapy on Clinical and Angiographic Outcomes in Patients with High-risk Acute Coronary Syndrome

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.572
Synopsis:
We evaluated the effects of garlic-lemon therapy on atherosclerosis, wherein combination therapy provided only symptomatic benefits. Although no angiographic regression was observed in atherosclerotic plaques, it was found to be associated with a decrease in the need for early revascularization.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Several natural supplementations have been investigated over centuries for a wide variety of ailments. There is limited information available on the effect and safety of these natural supplementations on patients with high risk coronary artery disease. We aim to evaluate the results of garlic and lemon therapy via clinical and angiographic outcomes in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

Mediastinal Thymolipoma: An Evaluation of the Clinical and Radiological Features and the Surgical Outcomes in 11 Cases

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.559
Pages:
212-5
Synopsis:
Thymolipoma is a rare, benign tumour of the mediastinum. Many patients are asymptomatic. The tumour is sometimes associated with parathymic disorders such as myasthenia gravis. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice in the patients with thymolipoma. Complete surgical resection is the cure in most patients.

ABSTRACT

Background: Thymolipoma is a rare benign tumour of the mediastinum, accounting for 2%–9% of all thymic tumours. Although many case reports have been published in the literature, few studies have analysed the clinical and radiological features and the surgical outcomes of this tumour.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical and radiological features and the surgical outcomes of the patients with thymolipoma.

Seasonal Variation by Race in the Male-to-Female Ratio at Birth in the United States

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.279
Pages:
129-33
Synopsis:
Births by gender and by race for 2003–13 in the United States of America showed more male births in Asians, followed by Whites and American Indian/Alaska Native populations. Significant seasonality was present (with a peak in June) for Whites more than Blacks/African-Americans.

ABSTRACT

Objective: In humans, males’ births exceed females’ births. This ratio is conventionally referred to as M/F and is used to denote male births divided by total births. This ratio is influenced by a large number of factors and has been shown to exhibit seasonality. This study was carried out in order to ascertain whether seasonal variation in M/F exists in the United States of America and whether such variations are influenced by race.
