Porphyromonas gingivalis LPS-induced IL-1β and IL-8 Expression by Reducing MAPK Activation in THP-1 Cells

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.081
Synopsis:
The study investigated the inhibitory effects of alpha-mangostin on Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling in THP-1 cells. The results indicated that alpha-mangostin suppresses the production of IL-1β and IL-8 in P. gingivalis LPS-stimulated THP-1 cells, possibly by reduction the activation of MAPK pathway. These findings suggest the possible use of alpha-mangostin as an anti-inflammatory agent in adjunctive treatment of periodontitis.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the inhibitory effects of alpha-mangostin on Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling in THP-1 cells.

Does Nasal Septal Deviation Have an Influence on Distribution Patterns of the Frontal Ethmoidal Cells?

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.076
Synopsis:
The effect of nasal septal deviation on the presence of the frontal ethmoidal cells have not been studied before. Our study suggests that the presence and distribution of frontal ethmoidal cells are not influenced by nasal septal deviation.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the role of nasal septal deviation on the presence or distribution patterns of the frontal ethmoidal cells (types I to IV), the pneumatization patterns of the frontal sinus, and to search the association between the frontal ethmoidal cells and the pneumatization degree of the frontal sinus and the presence of concha bullosa.

Hearing Abnormalities in Patients with Osteoarthritis

Pages:
10.7727/wimj.2016.085
Synopsis:
In conclusion, significant differences in the pure-tone average values and hearing thresholds at 4000-12500 Hz detected in patients with osteoarthritis demonstrate involvement of the functions of the inner ear.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study was designed to compare the prevalence of hearing abnormalities between the patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and an age and gender-matched control group without OA.

Condom Use and HIV Status: A Study of Sex-workers Engaged with the Jamaican AIDS Support for Life

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.067
Pages:
132–6
Synopsis:
Among Jamaican sex-workers, condom use is consistently lower with regular partners than with outside partners. By guiding prevention efforts to focus on condom use within long-term relationships, there exists an opportunity to ameliorate the rate of HIV transmission among sex-workers, clients and partners.

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.209
Pages:
73-81
Synopsis:
The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical and demographical features of the recurrent youth suicide attempts and identify the possible risk factors. The most diagnosed psychiatric disorder in the cases of the recurrent suicide attempts and the first time suicide attempts was depression (49.1% and 8.6%, respectively).

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the clinical and demographical features of recurrent youth suicide and identity possible risk factors.

Methods: In this study, all patients admitted to our paediatric emergency department with adolescent suicide attempts, from the dates of January 2011 and September 2014, were analysed with the goal to identify the risk factors for reoccurring suicide and clinical outcomes retrospectively.

Can Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid and Lugol’s Iodine be used Instead of Colposcopy in Low Resource Settings?

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.476
Synopsis:
This study focused on analyzing the effectiveness of visual inspection after acetic acid (VIA) and visual inspection with Logol's iodine (VILI) in abnormal cervical cytology (ACC). We concluded that VIA and VILI can be used instead of colposcopy in patients with ACC when colposcopy is unavailable in low resource settings.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this study is to estimate the diagnostic efficacy of VIA (Visual Inspection after Acetic Acid) and VILI (Visual Inspection with Lugol's Iodine) and to investigate the strength of the correlation between VIA, VILI, and colposcopic examination using Reid Colposcopic Index (RCI) and histopathology.
