Protective Effect of Hydrogen Injected Subcutaneously on Testicular Tissues of Rats Exposed to Cigarette Smoke

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.332
Synopsis:
Rat suffered smoke was used to investigate the protective effect of hydrogen injection on cigarette smoke-induced damage of reproductive system. Our result showed that hydrogen injected exerted protective effects on rats’ reproductive system exposed to smoke via inhibiting oxidative damage.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study was aimed to investigate the protective effect of hydrogen on cigarette smoke-induced damage in rat reproductive system.

Methods: Adult male rats which suffered smoke were randomly divided into four groups, then total sperm count was counted, testosterone, superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) of serum and testis were determined. H&E straining of the testis tissues was also performed.

Evaluation of the Clinical and Laryngoscopic Findings in Patients with Angio-oedema: An 11-Year Experience at a Single Tertiary Care Centre

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.393
Synopsis:
Angio-oedema Patients with dysphagia and swelling of posterior pharyngeal wall on clinical examination has significant positive correlation with laryngeal swelling on scopy; hence these patients should be referred to the otolaryngologist and to a facility with intensive care unit care as early as possible for safe management

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the clinical features of angio-oedema (AE) and their correlation with fibre-optic nasolaryngoscopy (FNL) findings.

Methods:  The charts of adult AE patients for 225 episodes who were admitted as in-patients from January 2002 through December 2012 were reviewed.

Neuromuscular Functional Changes of the Quadriceps after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.558
Pages:
196-200
Synopsis:
Neuromuscular changes of the quadriceps after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction are significantly overcome in the first year after surgery. The electromyographic examinations indicated that tourniquet use not only caused functional harm in the quadriceps muscle, but it also caused structural damage.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the factors related to quadriceps weakness, to evaluate electromyographic changes in the quadriceps and to attempt to determine the neuromuscular restoration period after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair.

Prevalence of Sickle Cell Disease among Newborns in St Vincent and the Grenadines: A Retrospective Study

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.593
Pages:
486–90
Synopsis:
This is a retrospective study to determine the prevalence of sickle cell disease among lives births in St Vincent and the Grenadines. The results of this study indicate a birth prevalence that is similar to the published data from the other Caribbean Islands.

ABSTRACT

Objective: In the United States of America (USA), sickle cell disease (SCD) occurs in 1:375 African-American births. However, published data from the Caribbean have revealed higher numbers for some Caribbean islands. St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) is a multi-island nation in the Caribbean, and there are currently no data on the incidence or prevalence of the disease in this population. The objective of this study was to obtain birth prevalence estimates for SCD in SVG.

Analysis of Water Used for Haemodialysis in Dialysis Centres, South East Nigeria: How Adequate?

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.464
Pages:
578-84
Synopsis:
Water purity is important for effective haemodialysis. In this study, we analysed the water used for haemodialysis in eight centres in South East Nigeria for its adequacy. All these centres failed the standard of the Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI).

 ABSTRACT

Background: Standard water purity is one of the essential ingredients in achieving the goals of haemodialysis. However, water purity, though cardinal to the outcomes of haemodialysis, is probably the most neglected aspect of renal replacement therapy with haemodialysis.

The Efficacy of Quadruple Therapy in the Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in Cases of Duodenal Ulcer

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.516
Synopsis:
Quadruple treatment has been recommended by Maastrich-IV Consensus for Helicobacter pylori eradication in regions with high clarithromycine resistance rate. However, patients with duodenal ulcer are special populations. Our study showed unsatisfactory eradication success of quadruple treatment in this group.

ABSTRACT

Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is an important cause of duodenal ulcer (DU) and eradication this infection can prevent complication related to DU and recurrence of the DU. Quadruple therapy (QT) is one of the recommended treatment regimen for the H. pylori eradication. But there has not been enough data for impact of the QT on eradication success of the H. pylori in patients with DU. We aimed to investigate success of QT in H. pylori positive patients with DU.
