A Novel Marker Demonstrating Endothelial Dysfunction in Behçet's Disease, YKL-40

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.025
Synopsis:
This study demonstrated that serum YKL-40 level was significantly higher in patients with an active and inactive Behçet's disease (BD) compared to the healthy individuals. This difference was, however, not the case between the active and inactive disease groups.

ABSTRACT

Background: To evaluate the relationship between disease activity and levels of YKL-40 in patients with Behcet’s disease (BD).

Methods: Twenty five active and twenty six inactive BD patients and 24 age and gender matched healthy control subjects were included in the study. Serum YKL-40 levels were measured using Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ng/mL). Disease activity was assessed using Behcet’s Disease Current Activity Form (BDCAF).

Meropenem Efflux in Pseudomonas aeruginosa at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Jamaica

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.022
Pages:
105-9
Synopsis:
This article examined efflux as a mechanism of carbapenem resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates at a hospital in Jamaica. The study detected that 80% of the isolates tested had efflux as a mechanism of resistance to meropenem.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Several mechanisms account for carbapenem resistance in Pseudomonas (P.) aeruginosa which is an emerging problem at a tertiary care hospital (TCH) in Jamaica.  The observed pattern of carbapenem resistance that results from efflux mechanisms is unique because it is specific to meropenem (MEM).  Investigation of efflux as a mechanism of carbapenem resistance needed to be done as the information obtained could inform therapeutic and infection control strategies.

Publication Trends in West Indian Medical Journal: A 12-Year Bibliometric Study Populates an Ontology

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.336
Pages:
486-91
Synopsis:
A 12-year bibliometric analysis of publication trends in the West Indian Medical Journal considers the number and types of articles published, geographic area of research work, extent of collaboration based on co-authorship, medical specialties of research and institutional affiliation of the corresponding author. An ontology has been populated by these data to support future mathematical modelling and simulation.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Formal specifications of scientometric data representing a journal's output were to be generated.

Methods: Individual print issues of the West Indian Medical Journal (WIMJ) from 2001 to 2012 were perused. An ontology was populated with the results in accordance with the OWL DL format.

Comparison of Indices between PCOS and Non-PCOS Patients in Assisted Reproduction

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.012
Synopsis:
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients are always infertile, but could have progenies by assisted reproductive technology (ART). Polycystic ovary syndrome patients have abnormal hormonal levels, and higher body mass index (BMI) than non-PCOS patients statistically. Although PCOS patients showed no advantages in ART, their babies had no risks in general characteristics compared to non-PCOS patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients are infertile in most cases, but could have progenies through assisted reproductive technology (ART). Birth weight, which has been extensively investigated recently, were used as an indicator of ART risks in offspring.

Methods: Characters of PCOS patients and their babies were compared with non-PCOS ones.

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.017
Synopsis:
The present study investigated the effectiveness of intradiscal steroid injection in the treatment of discogenic, low-back pain with neuropathic pain. Intradiscal steroid injections appear to be an effective and promising treatment for the neuropathic pain component in discogenic, low-back pain.

ABSTRACT

Background: The aim of  the present study  was  to investigate the effectiveness of intradiscal steroid injection in the treatment of discogenic low back pain (DLBP) with neuropathic pain (NeP).

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound Therapy Combined Gemcitabine for Treating Unresectable Pancreatic Carcinoma

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.013
Synopsis:
We aimed to study the therapeutic effect and safety of high-intensity-focused ultrasound (HIFUT) combined Gemcitabine on unresectable pancreatic carcinoma in clinic. Our results showed that HIFUT combined gemcitabine is better than gemcitabine only. The former treatment (HIFUT combined gemcitabine) may become a better effective treatment strategy for treating unresectable pancreatic carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study therapeutic effect and safety of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) combined Gemcitabine on unresectable pancreatic carcinoma (PC).

Platelet Count and Mean Platelet Volume: Supportive Markers in Differentiation of Tuberculosis and Sarcoidosis

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.011
Synopsis:
Tuberculosis and sarcoidosis are two diseases showing histological and clinical similarities and the differential diagnosis of the two is still very challenging. In this study, platelet (PLT) count and mass platelet volume (MPV) were found to be supportive in the differentiation of tuberculosis and sarcoidosis.

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.003
Synopsis:
This study showed that primary immunodeficiency patients have low serum levels of vitamins A and E, and serum vitamin A levels were positively correlated with decreased IgG levels. Vitamin D levels were not different between patients and healthy controls.

ABSTRACT

Background: A,D and E vitamins have a very important role in humoral and cellular immunity.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare serum levels of these vitamins in patients with various Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) and healthy controls.
