The Effect of Three Different Applications on Rocuronium Injection Pain: A Double Blinded, Randomized Clinical Study

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.004
Synopsis:
Rocuronium induces severe and noxious pain when administered intravenously during anaesthesia induction. We suggested that remifentanyl can be used as intravenous bolus to prevent rocuronium induced pain as effective as remifentanyl and lidocaine administration with venous occlusion.

ABSTRACT

Background: Some agents such as rocuronium and propofol induce severe and noxious pain when administered intravenously during anesthesia induction. This causes to additional stress for the patient who is already stressful due to operation. The purpose of our study was to compare the effects of remifentanyl with two different administration methods and lidocaine on rocuronium injection pain.

Exercise Behaviour in Patients with Chronic Diseases

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.232
Pages:
340–5
Synopsis:
Exercise behaviour changes in patients with chronic illnesses and exercise self-efficacy were studied. Fifty-one per cent were in the contemplation stage and 29% in maintenance. Sixty-one per cent of the patients were non-adopters and 39% were adopters. Self-efficacy scores in stages four and five were significantly higher than in stage two. In patients with one chronic condition 55% were non-adopters compared to 71% with more than one condition.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study was aimed at identifying the stages of exercise behaviour changes experienced by patients with chronic illnesses and the relationship with their exercise self-efficacy.

Method: The patients attending the Medical clinics at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), Jamaica, with chronic illnesses were studied. The data were collected using three questionnaires.

Healthcare Utilization for Acute Febrile Illness, Knowledge of Malaria and Trust in Informational Resources among Clinic Attendees in Port-au-Prince and Artibonite Département: A Cross-sectional Survey

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.231
Synopsis:
A clinic-based cross-sectional survey was conducted during 2012–13 in Port-au-Prince and Artibonite Département, Haiti to assess the utilization of health facilities and treatment options for acute febrile illness (AFI), knowledge of malaria, and types and trust in malaria information sources.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The overall aim of the project was to understand healthcare utilization patterns and access to and trust in resources regarding malaria and other febrile illness in two regions (Port-au-Prince and Artibonite Département) differentially affected by the 2010 earthquake.

Mass Spectrometric Analysis of Cerebrospinal Fluid Protein for Glioma and its Clinical Applications

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.233
Synopsis:
The combination of SELDI-TOF-MS and bioinformatics tools is a very effective method for screening and identifying new marker of glioma. The established diagnosis models have provided a new way for the clinical diagnosis of glioma, especially for qualitative diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To establish and evaluate the fingerprint diagnostic models of cerebrospinal protein profile in glioma Using surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) and bioinformatics analysis, for seeking new tumor markers.

What Are the Roles of Carbapenems in an Institution-specific Epidemiological Antibiogram in East Trinidad?

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.225
Pages:
136-9
Synopsis:
This paper provides an overview of the development of an institution-specific antibiogram, looking at last-line antibiotics, such as carbapenems. This provides an epidemiological trend for the entire institution. Patients’ specific antibiograms and unit-specific trends (eg intensive care units, surgical wards and outpatient clinics) can be used as a guide in patients with less severe infections. Thus, these recommendations should be tailored, as appropriate. This will help reduce the development of resistance when treating any patient for whom swabs, blood or urine are submitted.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To provide an overview of the development of an institution-specific epidemiological antibiogram. Emphasis was on last-line antibiotics, such as carbapenems.

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.193
Pages:

Synopsis:
Thyrotoxic hypokalaemic periodic paralysis has rarely been described among West Indians. We draw attention to seven cases encountered on the Island of Trinidad over a 25-year period in diverse ethnicities. All the cases were successfully treated. The global literature on thyrotoxic is reviewed from a West Indian perspective with an hypokalaemic periodic paralysis emphasis on the multiethnic presence of this illness in modern-day cosmopolitan populations.
