Application of Computer Navigation-assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery in Resection of Rib Tumour

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.528
Synopsis:
Based on our clinical experiences, the combined surgical method is especially feasible for the tiny tumour or some tumours that are unreachable or resided in scapula and deep face of breast.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Excision of rib tumors by conventional surgical method often results in poor prognosis due to trauma and heavily bleeding. In the present study, we evaluated the advantages of applying computer navigation-assisted thoracoscope in the resection of rib tumors.

Comparative Analysis of Mechanical Properties of Common Carotid Artery between Young and Old Specimen

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.218
Synopsis:
The morphology and longitudinal tensile properties of carotid artery in elderly group of changed.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to perform the carotid artery stretching experiments with young and elderly corpse for the study of carotid atherosclerosis pathogenesis and biomechanical basis.

Methods: 15 carotid arteries were randomly selected from young and elderly groups, respectively, for the longitudinal tensile test, and 1 specimens of each group was randomly selected for the morphological observation.

Impacts of Maternal Fish Consumption and Natural Environment on Placental Mercury Levels in Jamaica

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.239
Pages:
346–51
Synopsis:
Maternal fish consumption, as well as, residence can influence placental mercury concentration. The highest placental mercury was found in areas within bauxitic soil.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Mercury is a neurotoxin that is introduced to pregnant women from the soil, air pollutants and fish intake. Mercury in the placenta can be a biomarker for both maternal and fetal exposure. The objective of this study was to investigate how dietary patterns and environmental conditions can affect mercury concentration levels in the human placenta.

Pages:
27–31
Synopsis:
This was an observational study of red cell transfusions in intensive care unit patients at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). It was found that UHWI did not demonstrate a restrictive transfusion practice as defined by the TRICC trial, but was not as liberal as other countries.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine current red cell transfusion practices, transfusion indications and their relationship to patient outcome in intensive care unit (ICU) patients at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).

A Standardized versus an Individualized Approach in Managing Difficult Asthma: A Dilemma

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.219
Synopsis:
The current case study presents a case of uncontrolled asthma. Spirometery forms one of the important parameters in assessing lung function assessment. Despite the normal values of spirometery, patient clinical presentation did not related to her spirometry values. After troubling four years, doctors initiated Anti-IgE monoclonal antibody therapy that resulted in the patient's improvement. Often, during clinical practices doctors face challenges where they have to make patient decisions based on their clinical expertise rather than following the standard protocols

ABSTRACT

Background: The adherence to clinical practice guidelines often aids in improving clinical decisions. However, doctors at times have to look beyond clinical practice guidelines to treat their patients. Situational awareness and clinical experience often put doctors in a better position to treat and manage asthmatic patients.
