Test-retest Reliability of Ocular Vestibular Myogenic Potential in Healthy Pilots

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.202
Synopsis:
Twenty Chinese pilots underwent two oVEMP test with an interval of one week. Good to excellent test-retest reliability was established for the oVEMP test in all pilots. It implies that the oVEMP test was reliable in the vestibular evaluation of the pilots.

Diagnostic Value of Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio in Allergy Patients

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.242
Pages:
227-9
Synopsis:
This study was conducted to investigate the association between neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the progression of the disease in the cases of acute allergic reactions. The significantly high NLR in acute allergic reaction cases in this study suggests that it may be a useful diagnostic parameter in allergic reactions.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the relationship between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the clinical characteristics of the acute allergic reaction patients diagnosed in an emergency clinic.

Odontogenic Maxillofacial Infections in a High-level Hospital: Orofacial Pain and Related Conditions

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.365
Pages:
144-7
Synopsis:
This study analysed admissions related to maxillofacial infections with a dental component in a public hospital in southern Chile. The clinical conditions, diagnoses and treatments were examined.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Odontogenic infection is a common condition in America; the aim of this research was to determine the profile of odontogenic maxillofacial infections and to identify the link between these and the pain felt by patients admitted to the emergency dental service of the Hernán Henríquez Aravena Hospital in Temuco, Chile.

Clinicopathological Characteristics and Treatment Outcomes of Pulmonary Carcinosarcoma in Eight Patients

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.042
Pages:
533-7
Synopsis:
The present study included eight cases with pulmonary carcinosarcoma. Pathological diagnosis of PC was made by surgical resection in all patients. Operations were lobectomy (n = 6), bilobectomy inferior (n = 1) and pneumonectomy (n = 1). The median survival time was 21.5 months (range: 1-75 months).

ABSTRACT

Background: Pulmonary carcinosarcoma (PC) is a rare malignant tumour of the lung. Due to its rarity, few studies have been reported and its clinicopathological characteristics and treatment outcomes remain unclear. The aim of the present study was to evaluate clinical, radiological and pathological findings and treatment outcomes of patients with PC.

Treating Children with Spinal Tuberculosis via Debridement with Allograft

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.356
Pages:
357–60
Synopsis:
The mothers’ iliac bone was obtained to reconstruct the graft of the children’s anterior spinal column, thereby inducing new bone formation without affecting the growth and development of the children. The efficacy of debridement was definite.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This work aims to investigate the efficacy of debridement for paediatric thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis (TB) by using the anterior approach and the allogeneic bone graft.

Atropa belladonna (Deadly Nightshade) Poisoning in Childhood

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.457
Pages:
230-4
Synopsis:
Atropa belladonna intoxication may seriously progress in the act of late diagnosis and treatment in childhood. It is crucial to realize that in Atropa belladonna poisoning, patients should be evaluated carefully in terms of intensive care needs. Patients with Glasgow Coma Scale < 12 should be observed in the intensive care unit.

ABSTRACT

Objective: A very small amount of Atropa belladonna (AB) can lead to serious symptoms of poisoning and can cause death in children. In this study, demographic, clinic and laboratory results of AB poisoning were evaluated.

Effect of Personality Traits on development of Acute Mountain Sickness in Rapid Entry Population

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.209
Pages:
225–31
Synopsis:
We hypothesized that the personality traits, the emotion and stress disturbances induced by the high altitude environment may contribute to the development of acute mountain sickness (AMS). In the current study, young adult subjects who travelled to the plateau from the plain area by air were recruited. The emotional anxiety and personality traits of the participants were investigated by questionnaires, respectively. The correlation of anxiety and personality traits with the development of AMS was analysed. The Benefit of the Reperfusion Procedure after Renal Ischaemia in Rabbits Being Initiated with Distilled Water

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.314
Pages:
25–30
Synopsis:
This was a biochemical and histopathological investigation of the effect of distilled water on oxidative injury induced with ischaemia/reperfusion in rabbit kidneys. This study indicates that the use of distilled water can be beneficial in protecting against injury caused in the kidneys by the ischaemia/reperfusion procedure applied in surgical interventions.
