The Effects of Mild Hypothermia on Coagulation and Haemodynamic Variables in Anaesthetized Rabbits

Issue:
Pages:
513–8
Synopsis:
This study investigated the effect of mild hypothermia on prothrombin and partial thromboplastin time, platelet count, fibrinogen, blood pressure and heart rate in rabbits. The coagulation mechanism was not clinically affected by mild hypothermia, while haemodynamic responses were significantly suppressed.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Hypothermia has been associated with coagulation defects. The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of mild hypothermia on clinically used coagulation tests and on haemodynamic variables.

Seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori Infection in Adults in the Bahamas

Issue:
Pages:
662–5
Synopsis:
Helicobacter pylori infection is a common chronic infection in the Caribbean. This study reports the seroprevalence of H pylori in a healthy adult population in the Bahamas

ABSTRACT

Objectives: A number of studies have evaluated Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection in the Caribbean. However, to date there is no available epidemiological data on its occurrence in the Bahamas. Therefore, we determined the seroprevalence of H pylori in a healthy adult population in Nassau, Bahamas.

Correlation of Brain Natriuretic Peptide and Microalbuminuria in Patients with Heart Failure

Issue:
Pages:
658–61
Synopsis:
This present study indicated that the plasma levels of NTproBNP and MAU increased synchronously in pace with the aggravation of heart failure, and there was a positive correlation between MAU and NT-proBNP. To some extent, monitoring MAU might replace monitoring NTproBNP in patients with heart failure.
ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the changes of plasma levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic pepide (NTproBNP) and microalbuminuria (MAU) in patients with heart failure and the correlation between them.

Left Ventricular Posterior Wall Thickness is an Independent Risk Factor for Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation

Issue:
Pages:
647–52
Synopsis:
The authors have hypothesized that left ventricular posterior wall thickness is an independent risk factor for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. This study offers novel information therapeutically beyond that provided by traditional clinical atrial fibrillation risk factors.

ABSTRACT

Background: Atrial fibrillation is the most common significant cardiac arrhythmia in clinical practice, but its risk factors remain to be clarified. We have hypothesized that left ventricular posterior wall thickness is an independent risk factor for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF).
