The Application of Chromosome Abnormality Chip Detection in Male Infertility

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.213
Synopsis:
Chromosome abnormality chip detection system provides a sensitive, economic and high-throughput method for detecting the deletion or amplification of genomic DNA sequences of infertile patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To discuss the application of microarray technology in the diagnosis of male infertility.

Methods: Sixteen loci, including a sex-determining region on the Y chromosome, were investigated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in infertile male patients. Chromosome abnormality chip with 180 000 probes was used to detect small deletion, small amplification and loss of heterozygosity.

Sonographic Biometry of Normal Kidney Dimensions among School-age Children in Nsukka, Southeast Nigeria

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.010
Pages:
46–53
Synopsis:
Some kidney diseases are usually associated with changes in kidney size. Sonographic determination of pathologic changes in the size of the kidneys necessitates knowing the normal ranges of kidney lengths especially with respect to height in school-age children.

ABSTRACT

Background: Some kidney diseases are usually associated with changes in kidney size.

Objective: To determine sonographically the normal limits and percentile curves of the kidney dimensions according to age, gender and somatometric parameters among school-age children.

Discussion Based on Analysis of the Suicide Rate and the Average Disposable Income per Household in Japan

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.298
Pages:
340–3
Synopsis:
The suicide rates and the average disposable income per household in Japan from 1994 to 2008 were examined. The average disposable income per household was related to the suicide rate among the total population and among men but not among women.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Suicide is one of the major social issues in Japan. According to a report of the National Policy Agency, there were approximately 22000 to 24000 annual suicides between 1994 and 1997 and there have been over 30000 annual suicides in Japan since 1998. For these reasons, we think it is important to discuss the economic factor related to suicides in recent years.

Fat Profile of Jamaican Ackees, Oleic Acid Content and Possible Health Implications

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.052
Pages:
9–12
Synopsis:
Ackee arilli oils were subjected to iodine value determinations and GC-MS analysis. Consistent with the iodine value, ackees analysed contained primarily oleic acid, palmitic and stearic acids with minor amounts of linoleic acid. Ackee diets may provide some health benefits.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To re-investigate the composition of ackee oil and unequivocally determine its principal fatty acid components.

Effect of Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement on Adjacent Inferior Intervertebral Space Stress

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.049
Pages:
172–3
Synopsis:
Intervertebral fusion and intervertebral disc discectomy can significantly affect the adjacent inferior intervertebral space stress. There is no obvious effect of cervical artificial disc replacement on adjacent inferior intervertebral space stress.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of C5/6 cervical artificial disc replacement (CADR), discectomy and intervertebral fusion on adjacent inferior (C6/7) intervertebral space stress, and provide a basis for application of CADR.

Blood Use in Neurosurgical Cases at the University Hospital of the West Indies

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.233
Pages:
54–8
Synopsis:
The neurosurgical population had a low transfusion rate. Higher American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status, low preoperative haemoglobin, a resident lead surgeon, and blood loss were significant predictors of perioperative transfusions. The Cross-match to Transfusion Ratio was high, suggesting that blood products can be better allocated.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Many neurosurgical cases are done without the need for blood transfusion, yet blood is unnecessarily cross-matched, resulting in wasted resources.  This study was undertaken to document and compare the number of units of blood components requested, cross-matched and transfused in neurosurgical cases at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).

Exploring Emotional Intelligence in a Caribbean Medical School

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.124
Pages:
159–66
Synopsis:
This preliminary study examined the emotional intelligence (EI) of a sample of medical students from a Caribbean medical school. The total mean score for EI fell within the average according to accepted standards; however, males and younger age groups (< 25 years) had significantly higher scores.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the Emotional Intelligence (EI) in medical students in a Caribbean medical school and investigate its association with gender, age, year of study and ethnicity.

Effects of Ionizing Radiation on Respiratory Function Tests and Blood Parameters in Radiology Staff

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.311
Pages:
40–5
Synopsis:
Radiology staff constantly exposed to ionizing radiation was evaluated to determine the relationship between pulmonary function and blood parameters. Although the respiratory functions of radiology staff are affected by many factors, continuous exposure to ionizing radiation is one of the important parameters. Radiology staff should be informed about preventable factors that negatively affect respiratory functions.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To evaluate pulmonary function tests and blood parameters and their relationship with sociodemographic data for radiology staff continuously exposed to ionizing radiation.

Ascorbic Acid Ameliorates Nicotine Exposure Induced Impaired Spatial Memory Performance in Rats

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.089
Pages:
318–24
Synopsis:
The effect of ascorbic acid against long-lasting behavioural impairments induced by prenatal nicotine exposure was studied in male offspring using a spatial memory paradigm. Ascorbic acid was found to be effective against these neurological perturbations.
ABSTRACT

Introduction: The long lasting behavioural and cognitive impairments in offspring prenatally exposed to nicotine have been confirmed in animal models. In the present study, we investigated the effect of ascorbic acid on prenatal nicotine exposure induced behavioral deficits in male offspring of rats.

Ultrasonographic Evaluation of Femoral Cartilage Thickness in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.221
Pages:
329–32
Synopsis:
In this study, we evaluated femoral cartilage thicknesses of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Our results indicate that AS patients seem to have thicker femoral cartilage, which could be related to anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF) treatment.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate femoral cartilage thickness in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) by using ultrasonography.
