The Anatomical Basis of the Medial Sural Artery Perforator Flaps

Issue:
Pages:
622–7
Synopsis:
The medial sural artery perforator flap has at least one or two perforators with an average size of 8.2 cm × 13.3 cm. Elevation of the flap will not affect the vascularity of the gastrocnemius muscle.
 ABSTRACT

Objectives: To study the perforators of the medial sural artery and the possible size of their flap.

Anti-inflammatory Activities of Cassia alata Leaf Extract in Complete Freund’s Adjuvant Arthritis in Rats

Issue:
Pages:
615–21
Synopsis:
The anti-inflammatory effects of Cassia alata leaf extract were investigated on complete Freund’s adjuvant induced arthritic rats. The extract from the leaves was able to significantly reduce the swelling observed in the knee joint. It was also able to effectively protect the articular cartilage from degradation as well as limit the number of differential leukocytes entering the synovial cavity during inflammation. Cassia alata possesses potent anti-inflammatory effects and should undergo further investigations of these properties.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of a hexane extract of Cassia alata leaves in complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) arthritis in rats.

Cassia alata Leaf Extract Induces Cytotoxicity in A549 Lung Cancer Cells via a Mechanism that is Caspase 8 Dependent

Issue:
Pages:
608–14
Synopsis:
The cytotoxic effect of a hexane extract of Cassia alata (C alata) leaves in parental and Caspase 8, 3 and 9 negative A549 lung cancer cells was evaluated after a 24-hour treatment period. C alata extract was cytotoxic in parental and caspase-9 negative, but not caspase 3 and 8 negative A549 cells. The IC50 values were 143 μg/ml and 145 μg/ml in parental and caspase 9 negative A549 cells respectively. The flavanoid kaempferol was identified as a constituent of C alata leaf extract. These results suggest a cytotoxic effect of C alata that is dependent on caspase 8.

Tobacco and Non-communicable Diseases: Controlling the Tobacco Epidemic

Issue:
Pages:
490–2
Synopsis:
Cigarette smoking has been identified as a high risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary heart disease, strokes and peripheral vascular disease. It results in the intensification of the vascular diseases of hypertension and diabetes. The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, established by the World Health Organization in 2003, with its wide ranging recommended strategies and activities, offers a comprehensive approach towards reducing the impact on health by tobacco use. Countries should mobilise governments and civil society to implement the treaty.
