Professor Kenneth Magnus

Chemist who undertook myriad research studies and pioneered important teaching programmes and initiatives across the region. Professor Kenneth Magnus was an outstanding educator. In 1968, he started the Applied Chemistry Programme at UWI, which became a separate degree at the Mona and St. Augustine Campuses. Between 1969 and 1970, he helped develop the science curriculum for Jamaica's primary and secondary schools.

Physician/Educator who has done pioneering work in the production of xanthan gum from a by-product of sugarcane for whichshe holds two research patents.She established the first fermentation facility of Basic Medical Sciences in 1997.Dr. Hamilton’s other achievements include the establishing of the UWI Microbiology Analytical Services, which is a commercial laboratory.

Botanist whose pioneering research in water recycling technology demonstrated the value of reclaimed waste water for the production of crops. Professor Sidrak’s work resulted in the establishment of a small waste water treatment plant which is credited with keeping the University’s lawns green even during a drought. The technology used in that project was later adopted for similar projects in Portmore communities.

Geologist who is the conceptualizer and primary developer of the Caribbean's first GPS navigation system. Working with GIS - geographic information systems – Dr. Lyew-Ayee has been providing real-time technology aids to the security forces and others with an interest in spatial mapping.Dr. Lyew-Ayee is currently a joint researcher with the Planetary Sciences Institute (Tucson, Arizona) in examining rock breakdown characteristics of Martian rocks for a NASA project.

Computer Scientist/Electrical Engineer who co-invented what could be the world's first cardiac surgery simulator, a device used to train students in doing heart surgery. This invention has generated interest from some of the leading hospitals in the United States and has been used in the training of more than 140 cardiothoracic surgery residents in the United States at the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association (TSDA) Resident Boot Camps (intensive training sessions for physicians who are beginning their residency training in cardiothoracic surgery) and has been shown to be a very effective training tool.

Pioneering geochemist who founded the International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS) in (1997). Lalor led a research team in the identification and the preparation of a geochemical map of the elements in Jamaican soils. The map identifies some of the major and micro elements in Jamaican soils and uncovered elements previously not known to be present. It assists with the identification of contaminated land and provides important information for government planning agencies.

Atmospheric Physicist who was a member of the Team which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for efforts made to increase and disseminate greater knowledge of man-made climate change and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.
