Six unlinked, anonymous point prevalence surveys of a total of 1288 male inmates were conducted during a one year period. The overall HIV prevalence was 2.8%, three times higher than the estimated OECS population prevalence.
ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine HIV prevalence among male prison inmates in the six OECS countries in the Caribbean.
Subjects and Methods: Six unlinked, anonymous point prevalence surveys of a total of 1288 male inmates were conducted during a one-year period, August 2004 – August 2005. An oral fluid sample was collected and an interviewer-administered questionnaire and consent form was completed for each survey participant.
Hidden disabilities, especially attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and the associated social and emotional challenges are significantly related to students’ academic performance and adjustment to university.
ABSTRACT

Twenty-one tetraketones were synthesized in high yields by condensation of cyclohexane-1, 3-dione with a variety of aldehydes in the presence of tetraethyl ammonium bromide (Et4N+Br¯) as catalyst under mild reaction conditions. Most of these compounds showed significant inhibitory activity against the enzyme lipoxygenase.
ABSTRACT
Objective: A series of tetraketones has been synthesized by way of a one pot synthesis and screened for inhibitory activity against the enzyme lipoxygenase.
Gelatin magnetic microspheres loaded with ranitidine were localized in the stomach by magnetic field for controlled drug delivery. The microspheres released/retained the drug over a period of eight hours in the stomach and are very useful in the oral controlled delivery of drugs that undergo intestinal metabolism.
Transfer of electrons from ferrocytochrome C to cytochrome c oxidase is facilated by enzyme-substrate complexes stabilized by salt bridges. Computer simulations were employed to identify residues that participate in intermolecular salt bridges.
In this study, radiation due to 201TI myocardial perfusion scintigraphy applications decreased the erythrocyte anti-oxidant levels and increase malondialdehyde.
The authors aimed to demonstrate the role of fear of pain during mammography and other factors including knowledge level, as deterrents to the participation of Jamaican women in mammographic
screening.
ABSTRACT
Objective: Less than five per cent of eligible Jamaican women had mammograms in 2003. The sociocultural determinants and the perceptual barriers modulating screening behaviour in Jamaican women are unclear. We sought to investigate sociocultural effects, in particular, knowledge and fear of the procedure on mammographic screening behaviour in Jamaican women.
This paper examines factors associated with depression in students attending the University of the West Indies Mona campus, Jamaica. Students with a chronic condition or a disability manifested higher depression scores than those without.
ABSTRACT
Objective: This project examines the factors associated with depression in students attending the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.
Method: Students enrolled in the Foundation courses during the first and second semesters of the 2005/2006 academic year were administered the Brief Screen for Depression as well as a demographic questionnaire as part of a larger study.
