Predicting 24-hour Urinary Protein Excretion in Afro-Caribbean Barbadians by Comparing Urine Protein Excretion over Different Durations versus Spot Collection

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.239
Pages:
190–4
Synopsis:
This article highlights the investigation of appropriate means of predicting 24-hour urinary protein excretion in Afro-Caribbeans in Barbados by assessing the correlation of urinary protein excretion between actual and measured protein excretion in a 24-hour urine collection, 12-hour (am and pm) and spot (am and pm) urine collections.

Evaluation of Paediatric Patients with Protein Losing Enteropathy: A Single Centre Experience

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.208
Pages:
186–9
Synopsis:
When proteinuria is not detected in well-appearing children admitted with oedema, protein losing enteropathy must be considered.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate paediatric patients with protein losing enteropathy (PLE).

Methods: Fourteen cases diagnosed as PLE were evaluated in terms of aetiologies, diagnostic methods, laboratory findings, treatment procedures and long-term prognosis.

In vitro and In vivo Anti-cancer Effects of Tillandsia recurvata (Ball Moss) from Jamaica

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.091
Pages:
177–80
Synopsis:
The anti-cancer activity of Tillandsia recurvata was evaluated. The crude extract demonstrated anti-proliferation activity, killing > 50% of the cells at a concentration of 2.5 μg/ml. Kaposi sarcoma tumours were inhibited by 75% compared to control in vivo (p < 0.05).

ABSTRACT

Objective: Tillandsia recurvata, also commonly known as Ball Moss, is endemic to Jamaica and some parts of the Caribbean and South America. The plant, despite being reported to be used in folk medicine, had not previously been evaluated for its anti-cancer potential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-cancer activity of Ball Moss.

Evaluation and Management of Hypertension in the Elderly

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.063
Pages:
907–11
Synopsis:
Screening for elevated blood pressure in the elderly is recommended, since the prevalence of hypertension increases with age, and can reduce the incidence of morbidity and mortality. A careful and individualized approach is needed when treating hypertension in the elderly, taking into account the presence of co-morbid diseases, drug interaction, side effects, lifestyle and functional state.

Ultrasound Detected Asymptomatic Cholelithiasis: An Age-based Protocol for Management

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.130
Pages:
903–6
Synopsis:
Patients with cholelithiasis were reviewed with ultrasound for acute and chronic cholecystitis. Patients 60 years and younger were more likely to have cholecystitis than older patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study was undertaken to examine the correlation between age and gender and the presence of ultrasound findings of acute or chronic cholecystitis in adult patients with cholelithiasis.

Method: The demographic data of all patients diagnosed with cholelithiasis and cholecystitis on ultrasound between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2006 were reviewed and statistically analysed.

Alcohol Use and Associated Factors among Adolescent Students in Thailand

Issue:
Pages:
890–6
Synopsis:
The prevalence of alcohol misuse among adolescents in Thailand was 14.8%. Efforts to prevent and control alcohol misuse may need to address a cluster of risk behaviours including cigarette smoking.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Alcohol misuse is a relevant public health issue in Thailand. The assessment of the prevalence of alcohol use among adolescents may guide policies and programmes aimed at reducing alcohol use among this age group.

Method: Using data from the Thailand Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) 2008, we assessed the prevalence of alcohol use and the associated factors among adolescents (n = 2758).
