A Critical Review of the Therapeutic Potential of Dibenzyl Trisulphide Isolated from Petiveria alliacea L (Guinea hen weed, anamu)

Issue:
Pages:
17–21
Synopsis:
The manuscript reviewed the 12 yrs (1992 – 2004) of research done on dibenzyl trisulphide (DTS) as a potential therapeutic agent. These studies revealed that DTS could be useful in the treatment of cancers, immunological disorders and memory loss.

Demonstration of Antihistamine Properties with AST-1: A Bioactive Extract from Garden Slugs (Diplosolenodes occidentalis)

Issue:
Pages:
11–6
Synopsis:
A bioactive extract from parched and ground garden slugs has H1-antihistamine properties which inhibited contraction of guinea pig in vitro tracheal muscle preparation and cutaneous allergic responses. These effects may be the scientific basis of a folklore use of slug material to control asthmatic attack that is most likely associated with allergy.

In Vitro Anti-Proliferation/Cytotoxic Activity of Epingaione and its Derivatives on the Human SHSY5Y Neuroblastoma and TE-671 Sarcoma cells

Epingaione (4-Methyl-1-(5-methyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-[2,3’]bifuranyl-5-yl)-pentan-2-one) was isolated as one of the major lipophilic secondary metabolites from the leaves and stems of Bontia daphnoides L. The compound gave 79.24% and 50.83% anti-proliferation/cytotoxic activity on the human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma and TE-671 sarcoma cells in vitro at 50 μg/mL, respectively. Epingaione was transformed into eleven derivatives under laboratory conditions using ethanol, some gave greater anti-proliferation/cytotoxic activity on the cancer cell lines tested.

Severe Sepsis in the Emergency Department – An Observational Cohort Study from the University Hospital of the West Indies

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.194
Pages:
224–9
Synopsis:
This study sought to describe the incidence, treatment and outcomes of patients with severe sepsis and septic shock at the University Hospital of the West Indies where early goal directed therapy (EGDT) is not yet practised. Sepsis treatment patterns were found to be consistent with “best practice”.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the incidence, treatment and outcomes of patients with severe sepsis and septic shock in a setting where early goal directed therapy (EGDT) is not routinely performed.

Diabetic Foot Complications among Patients Attending a Specialist Diabetes Clinic in Jamaica: Prevalence and Associated Factors

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.031
Pages:
216–23
Synopsis:
This study estimated the prevalence of diabetic foot complications among patients of a specialist diabetes clinic in Jamaica and evaluated factors associated with foot complications. Approximately one of every eight patients had a major foot complication (amputation, ulcer or infection). Associated factors were neuropathy, high blood pressure and longer duration of diabetes.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of diabetic foot complications among patients at a specialist diabetes clinic in Jamaica and identify factors associated with foot complications.

Comparative Proteomic Analysis of the Nucleus Accumbens during Extinction and Reinstatement of Morphine Dependence

Issue:
DOI:
10.727/wimj.2013.085
Pages:
210–5
Synopsis:
The aim of this study was to detect differentially expressed proteins in the nucleus accumbens between the states of extinction and reinstatement of morphine addiction. Significant changes in five proteins were detected between extinction and reinstatement. These proteins are correlated with phosphorylation and the tricarboxylic acid cycle.

ABSTRACT

Background: The aim of this study was to detect differentially expressed proteins in the nucleus accumbens between the states of extinction and reinstatement of morphine addiction. Numerous studies on the neurobiological mechanisms concerning drug craving and relapse have been reported to date, but data on their relationship with the underlying key molecular mechanisms involved remain limited.

Evaluation of the Efficacy of Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy in the Treatment of Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial in a Tertiary Hospital in Nigeria

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.057
Pages:
205–9
Synopsis:
This randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess the therapeutic efficacy of a non-pharmacological device, pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF), in the treatment of back pain. Patients who were treated with PEMF plus medications had a statistically significantly faster pain relief and resumption of active functions when compared with patients who were treated with only standard medications. Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is beneficial in reducing pain and disability in patients with back pain and should be made part of holistic care for back pain.

Vitamin D Deficiency Rickets in Infants Presenting with Hypocalcaemic Convulsions

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.269
Pages:
201–4
Synopsis:
Ninety-one infants with rickets presented to hospital with hypocalcaemia. Vitamin D deficiency should be considered in infants presenting with hypocalcaemic convulsion.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Hypocalcaemia evaluation of the clinical, biochemical and radiological features of 91 infants with rickets who presented as hypocalcaemic convulsions.

Subjects andMethods: Ninety-one hypocalcaemic infants who were brought to hospital with convulsion and diag-nosed with rickets related to vitamin D deficiency according to their clinical, biochemical and radio-logical features were retrospectively reviewed.

Vitamin D Deficiency in Risk Groups Living in Tropical Curaçao

Issue:
DOI:
10.727/wimj.2012.196
Pages:
195–200
Synopsis:
Avoiding sun exposure, although living in tropical areas, results in vitamin D deficiency. In our small pilot study, 38% of the people were at risk and had 25(OH)D levels below 50 nmol/L.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Curaçao (12 degrees 10N, 69 degrees 0W) is characterized by whole year abundant sunshine (8−10 hours/day). We challenged the automatic assumption that people living in tropical countries do not have a high risk of vitamin D deficiency, and investigated the vitamin D status in a tropical environment.
