The Effect of Unripe Carica Papaya Seeds Extract on Serum Profiles of Some Liver Functional Enzymes in Wistar Rat

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.502
Synopsis:
Healthy rats were separately administered different doses of aqueous carica papaya seeds extract to evaluate possible alterations in serum liver enzymes levels. Observed fall in serum aminotransferase enzymes level was clearly indicative of possible hepatoprotective properties of carica papaya seed.

A Profile of Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) in Primary Open Angle Glaucoma in Trinidad and Tobago and the Implications

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.553
Synopsis:
This study was designed as an observational, prospective longitudinal consecutive series of patients, with primary open angle glaucoma and control, conducted over a one year period. 80.2% of primary open angle glaucoma and 78.3% of controls had CCT <555um; this independently confers a 3.4 fold increased risk of developing glaucoma; both cohorts showed 25% had a family history of glaucoma. This study adds to the body of evidence demonstrating the high multiple risk factors within our population. The author discusses the epidemiological implications and the need for improved efforts towards developing screening programmes, earlier detection and timely intervention.

Estimation of Oxygen Diffusing Conductance in Different Dissection Portion of the Placental Cotyledon of Passive Smoking Mothers

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.531
Synopsis:
This study estimated the amount oxygen that can diffuse across the placenta of the passive, smoking mothers in an Indo-Asian population. There was no significant difference in the total oxygen-diffusing conductance in the placenta of the passive smokers. However, there was an adaptive mechanism taking place in the foetal part of the placenta.

Fine-needle-aspiration (FNA) Cytology for SRC Type Breast Cancer: 13 Case Reports

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.585
Synopsis:
This study estimated the nature of SRCs in different histological subtype of breast cancer in department of Ultrasound Diagnosis, the affiliated hospital of Qingdao University, Qingdao, China. It was indicated that its presence may not indicate poor prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the cytohistological findings of 13 breast carcinoma cases with SRCs

Methods: From January 2006 to August 2015, 13 cases of SRC type breast cancer had undergone FNA cytology examination before excisional biopsy or operation. All the histological sections of each case were confirmed to have at least 20% SRCs in the tumor cells. The clinicopathological features of SRC type breast cancer were investigated.

Protective Effects of Extracts from Polygonum Hydropiper L on Ethanol-Induced Acute Gastric Mucosal Lesions

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.503
Synopsis:
This study was to investigate the protective effect of extracts from Polygonum hydropiper on experimentally-induced AGML in mice. The findings showed that the extract could distinctly reduce the acute gastric mucosal damage, and these are closely associated with antioxidant effect. The extracts enhanced the activities of antioxidative enzymes SOD and GSH-Px and decreased the level of MDA in the serum and gastric tissues. In addition, the extracts increased the production of PGE2 and decreased the NO level in gastric tissues.

A Comparison of Weekly DCF versus Standard DCF as First-line Systemic Chemotherapy for Metastatic Gastric Cancer Patients

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.536
Pages:
18-22
Synopsis:
In metastatic gastric cancer (MGC), the goals of treatment are palliation and prolongation of overall survival. Systemic chemotherapy, with docetaxel, cisplatin, infusional 5-fluorouracil (DCF) are a commonly used regimen in MGC as first line chemotherapy with a low tolerability rate due to its toxicity. We evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of weekly DCF compared to standard DCF regimen.

What Are the Factors Affecting on the Mortality of COPD Patients in the ICU?

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.593
Synopsis:
Morbidity and mortality rates of COPD are continuously increasing throughout the world. We aimed to determine factors associated with in-hospital-mortality of all causes following critical care admissions of patients with COPD. Features during admission to the ICU of patients were studied such as demographic and clinical features, laboratory analyses and comorbid diseases. Co-morbid diseases such as CHF, AF and postoperative care affect mortality the most in COPD patients who are hospitalized in ICU. Laboratory tests like creatinine and clinical features like being intubated upon admission, duration of mechanical ventilation and EF are other independent variables that affect mortality.

ABSTRACT

Background: Morbidity and mortality rates of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are continuously increasing throughout the world. It is a major cause of death, imposes a great socioeconomic burden and constitutes a significant part of ICU patients.

Aim: To determine factors associated with in-hospital-mortality of all causes following   critical care admissions of patients with COPD.

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.494
Synopsis:
This study evaluated the causes of chronic persistent hypokaelemia in children at the University of Jordan. The most common cause of normotensive hypokalaemic metabolic alkalosis was Bartter syndrome. The most common cause of hypokalaemic metabolic acidosis was distal renal tubular acidosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Chronic hypokalaemia is a cause of morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study is to determine the aetiology of chronic hypokalaemia in children at a tertiary care hospital setting.

Methods: Retrospective medical record review of consecutive cases of persistent chronic hypokalaemia of more than three months duration.
