Availability and use of Contraceptive Implants in Jamaica: Results of a Medical Record Review and Provider Survey in Six Health Centers

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.554
Pages:
114-21
Synopsis:
Sub-dermal implants have few insertion complications and side-effects and are effective, but they are underutilized in Jamaica. Enhanced provider training and import in Jamaica may increase availability and utilization among women, leading to a long-term reduction in unintended pregnancy rates.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The prevalence of sub-dermal contraceptive implant use in Jamaica is low despite growing international acceptance of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). We assessed the availability, effectiveness, side-effects and utilization of sub-dermal contraceptive implants, and described characteristics of users over a one-year period.

The Effect of Tadalafil on Renal Fibrosis Induced by Ureteral Obstruction

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.518
Pages:
142–48
Synopsis:
This study was aimed to determine the possible therapeutic effects of tadalafil, a specific PDE5 inhibitor, on renal fibrosis induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). Our results suggested that tadalafil treatment ameliorated renal fibrosis by reducing TGF-β expression and might have important clinical relevance since tadalafil is currently used clinically to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension.

ABSTRACT

Objective: It has been reported that phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors improve kidney functions during acute and chronic renal failure. This study aimed to determine the possible therapeutic effects of tadalafil, a specific PDE5 inhibitor, on renal fibrosis induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO).

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.512
Synopsis:
This study evaluated the clinical spectrum of Behçet’s disease in both pediatric and adult patients and aimed to present the risk factors for severe organ involvements. The clinical features of children were found similar to the adults. While pathergy positivity was evaluated as a good prognostic factor, male gender and ocular involvement was associated with poor prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the clinical spectrum of Behçet’s disease in both pediatric and adult patients, and find out the risk factors for severe organ involvements.

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.515
Synopsis:
In Mexico, dental caries is a public dental problem. In this study, the authors realized two different models (Logistic and negative binomial regression) and observed diverse variables associated with caries. Results proved the existence of certain socioeconomic inequalities in oral health.

Severity and Outcomes of Afro-Caribbean Patients Diagnosed with Community Acquired Acute Kidney Injury at an Institution in Jamaica

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.505
Pages:
141–9
Synopsis:
There is limited data on community-acquired acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) in low/middle-income countries. Although the incidence of community-acquired AKI is much higher than hospital-acquired acute kidney injury, most previous studies on AKI mainly focussed on the latter one. A retrospective prevalence study was conducted for six months at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica to find out the prevalence, severity and outcomes of CA-AKI. The study demonstrated the prevalence of different AKI stages and its relationship to the contributory factors. It also highlighted the impact of severity on the renal outcomes.

Synopsis:
A cross-sectional, six-station screening process for non-communicable diseases was carried out at a walk-in clinic in Trinidad and Tobago: invitation and consent, history, biometrics, blood levels and urinalysis (laboratory), basic examinations and an exit interview. This process was found to be feasible and provided monetary value in three of four scenarios.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The overall aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of recommending a screening process for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and their risk factors, as a national and regional model.
