The Urinary Levels of Some Essential and Toxic Metals in Type 2 Diabetic Patients and Non-diabetic Healthy Control Human Subjects

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.134
Synopsis:
Elevated level of metals in blood is reflected in urine of the human diabetic subjects. As an increased urinary excretion of metals causes decrease in blood plasma level of that particular metal and vice versa. Toxic metals such as Pb may have a role to induce renal tubular dysfunction in diabetic patients. Subsequently, dysfunctional kidneys may become a potential source for the loss of several essential TE through urine voiding rather than their retention in blood plasma /serum in order to retain the homeostasis of blood and other tissues.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To compare the levels of some selected essential and toxic metals in type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients and non-diabetic (ND) healthy controls. Furthermore, study aims to evaluate the possible interrelationship of metals in urine of type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients and non-diabetic (ND) healthy controls.

The Evaluation of the Effects of Low-level Laser Therapy on Pain, Function, Muscle Strength, and Electroneuromyographic Tests in Patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.182
Synopsis:
The aim of this article was to evaluate the effects of Low-level laser therapy in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. This treatment was not superior from its sham application combined standard physiotherapy programme.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). In addition, the study aimed to address the gap in the literature on combined treatments by assessing the additional healing effect of LLLT when combined with physiotherapy interventions.

MiR-520c and MiR-519d Function as Oncogenes in Oesophageal Cancer

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.284
Synopsis:
Recent studies on miR-520c adn miR-519d have evidenced their either oncogenic or tumour suppresssing roles in different cancers. The present study being the first report on the evaluation of miR-519d expressions in ESCC.

ABSTRACT

Objectives:Esophageal cancer is a poorly characterized deadly cancer with a malignancy ratio of 2/3 among Iranian males and females, respectively. Recent studies on miR-520c and miR-519d have evidenced their either oncogenic or tumor suppressing roles in different cancers. The goal of this study was to assay the altered expressions of miR-520c and miR-519d in esophageal tumor tissues and adjacent non-tumor tissues in patients suffering from esophageal cancer.

Toothbrushing Frequency and Maternal Schooling Associated with Caries in Primary Dentition in 6- and 7-year-old Children

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.481
Pages:
545-9
Synopsis:
In Mexico, dental caries is highly prevalent in primary dentition. In this study, we determine the experience, prevalence and severity of caries in primary dentition. One in two children had dental caries. Oral hygiene practices were associated with dental caries. Certain inequalities in oral health were observed.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the experience, prevalence and severity of caries in primary dentition and associated factors in 6- and 7-year-old schoolchildren.

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.450
Synopsis:
This study observed patient wound swabs at the University Hospital in Zagreb Croatia in order to determine antibiotic resistance patterns to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in our patients. It was found that Pseudomonas aeurginosa show a high degree of resistance (>50% resistance) to antibiotics commonly used in day to day practice.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study was to use wound swabs to determine antibiotic resistance patterns in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which has been shown to be highly resistant to many commonly used antibiotics.

Israel Exhibits a Homogenous Male-to-Female Ratio at Birth for All Races and Religions

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.472
Pages:
69-72
Synopsis:
The proportion of male live births may fall with stress. This paper fails to find evidence of stress using the gender ratio at birth in Israel, when the country is studied by race or religion.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Male live births occur in excess of female live births and their ratio (M/F) is usually expressed as male divided by total births. The value of M/F varies, declining with stress. Israel has been shown to have a relatively stable M/F. This study was carried out in order to ascertain whether there were any racial or religious differences in M/F in Israel, and to compare with totals for Europe and North America.
