DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.087
Synopsis:
EGb 761 possesses antidepressant activity in rats exposed to CMS. Besides, it can partially reverse the alterations of IL-1β, IL-6, VEGF and HPA axis dysfunction induced by CMS in rats.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aims were to investigate the effects of EGb 761 on depressive behaviors in rats exposed to chronic mild stress (CMS) and the possible mechanisms of the actions.

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.248
Pages:
624-7
Synopsis:
This study focuses on Behçet’s disease, a vasculitic syndrome with unknown aetiopathogenesis including genetic factors, infections and cytokines. IL17 and IL 23 play important roles in inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel diseases, asthma, bacterial, fungal infections, maybe Behçet’s disease.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the relationship between disease activity and the involvement of Behçet’s disease (BD) and serum levels of interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-23.

Treatment of Parapelvic Cyst by Internal Drainage Technology Using Ureteroscope and Holmium Laser

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimjopen.2014.220
Pages:
230–5
Synopsis:
We explored the efficacy and safety of surgical approaches with holmium laser ureteroscopic internal drainage in the treatment of parapelvic cyst. In 28 cases of operation, 27 cases were successful. Our study shows that the treatment of parapelvic cyst by internal drainage operation using holmium laser and ureteroscopy had very good result with few complications.

ABSTRACT

Background: The aim of parapelvic cyst treatment is to have complete drainage of cyst fluid and prevent its further compression of the kidney and collective system. This study explores the efficacy and safety of surgical approaches with holmium laser ureteroscopic internal drainage in the treatment of parapelvic cyst.

Acute Complicated Sinusitis: Ten Years Experience from the University Hospital of the West Indies

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.156
Pages:
318–23
Synopsis:
Acute sinusitis has been associated with complications and has been seen most frequently in the adolescent male population. The most common complication is orbital. Surgical techniques have evolved from open sinus approaches to endoscopic approaches. Surgical treatment is indicated for those patients who fail medical management and should consist of an endoscopic approach which may be combined with open approaches if indicated.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Complicated sinusitis is rare. It might not be identified early and might expose the patient to an unfavourable outcome. There is a paucity of data regarding this condition in the Caribbean. This study was undertaken to describe the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients admitted with this condition.

Adult Epistaxis, Epidemiology and Management at the University Hospital of The West Indies

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.007
Pages:
100–04
Synopsis:
Epistaxis is stated as one of the most common otolaryngology emergencies. Minor epistaxis originates from the anterior septum and is secondary to nose picking in children and dessication of the mucosa in adults from dry air. Major epistaxis lacks a precise definition but is characterised as being difficult for patients to control which results in a visit to the emergency department. There is a high prevalence of elevated blood pressure readings and hypertension among our patients with epistaxis. Most cases of epistaxis can be managed successfully with non-surgical treatment.

The Investigation of Plasma Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Levels in Newly Diagnosed Type 1 Diabetic Children

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.134
Pages:
141–6
Synopsis:
Fasting and postprandial glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and C-peptide levels in 25 newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic children were not different from 22 healthy children used as control. This suggests that plasma GLP-1 levels play no role in the pathogenesis of Type 1 diabetes.

Abstract

Objective: To reveal the possible role of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic children.

Methods: Twenty-five newly diagnosed children and 22 healthy children were included in the study.
