Raynaud’s Phenomenon: Its Prevalence in Systemic Sclerosis and Its Relationship with the Onset and with the Subsets of Systemic Sclerosis – An Experience from the Kashmir Valley, India

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.058
Pages:
52-6
Synopsis:
Raynaud’s phenomenon usually predates the onset of cutaneous involvement in systemic sclerosis, but it can occur simultaneously or even follow the skin changes. Its evolution in the two subsets of systemic sclerosis can be a clinical pointer to differentiate between them.

ABSTRACT

Background: Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP) is a very common clinical sign in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Within the same country, its prevalence may vary depending on climactic changes. Usually, it predates the onset of cutaneous involvement in SSc, but in rare cases, it can follow the skin changes in these patients. Its evolution differs in the two subsets of SSc (limited and diffuse) and can serve as a clinical pointer to differentiate between the two disease subsets.

Non-communicable Diseases Risk Factors Survey 2014 among University of the West Indies staff, Trinidad and Tobago

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.051
Synopsis:
High prevalence of non-communicable diseases risk factors (physical inactivity, unhealthy diets, obesity, alcohol use and hypertension) was demonstrated among University of the West Indies staff in Trinidad and Tobago, with 30% having ≥ 3 risk factors, compared to 51% among the general Trinidad and Tobago population.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the prevalence of NCD risk factors among University of the West Indies staff in Trinidad and Tobago. To compare these results with the national population-based 2011 STEPS NCD risk factor survey for Trinidad & Tobago.

Ameliorative Effect of Zinc Oxide and Silver Nanoparticles on Antioxidant System in the Brain of Diabetic Rats

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.296
Synopsis:
The effect of zinc oxide and silver nanoparticles on the brain of diabetic rats was investigated. It was concluded that Zinc oxide and silver nanoparticles protect the brain's tissue against the bad effects of free radicals by improving the brain antioxidant power.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The present study tests the ability of both zinc oxide (ZnONPs) and silver (SNPs) nanoparticles to ameliorate the oxidative stress resulted from diabetes in diabetic rats was tested in the present study.

Is Laparoscopy for Non-palpable Testes a Well-known Entity?

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.195
Pages:
283-6
Synopsis:
We report our laparoscopy results in non-palpable testes cases and emphasize the utility of laparoscopy in unilateral, non-palpable testes cases in contrast to a previously published paper. We also discussed different aspects of the laparoscopic approach for non-palpable testis.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Laparoscopy has been accepted as the best diagnostic tool and suggested as the treatment of choice for non-palpable testes cases. However, its use in unilateral non-palpable testis cases has been previously debated.

Methods: The clinical records of the non-palpable testis cases that were managed with laparoscopy between January 2011 and December 2013 were retrospectively reviewed.

Study pertaining to the Hypothermic Activity of Plumeria rubra, Linn. in PGE1 and TAB-Vaccine Induced Pyrexia Models in Rabbits

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.172
Synopsis:
Plumeria rubra, is a potent hypothermia agent. Its efficacy was tested against typhoid (TAB) vaccine and prostaglandin-induced hyperthermia in rabbits. At oral test dose 100 and 200 mg/kg, Plumeria rubra showed excellent hypothermic potential comparable to paracetamol and aspirin.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Plumeria rubra, Linn is a potent medicinal plant in the global systems of medicine. The objective of the present work was to study the antipyretic activity of the plant: Plumeria rubra, Linn is belonging to the family Apocynaceae.

A Qualitative Assessment of Trauma Care at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation in Guyana

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.331
Pages:
202–7
Synopsis:
This qualitative study assessed subjective trauma team performance at Geogetown Public Health Corporation. Poor inter-professional communication and teamwork were seen as major barriers to optimal team performance, identifying a need for improved inter-professional training and collaboration.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this study was to gain qualitative feedback on trauma team performance at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Guyana. Awareness of participants’self-identified strengths, weakness and areas for improvement can guide future trauma team training (TTT) programmes and local interventions.

Rapamycin Improves Vascular Remodelling in a Controlled Rat Model of Monocrotaline-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.222
Pages:
638-44
Synopsis:
We evaluated the effect of rapamycin on pulmonary arterial hypertension. Rapamycin provided improvements in exercise capacity, right ventricular systolic pressure and hypertrophy, but those were not significant. There were significant recoveries in the pulmonary artery muscular layer thickness and in the median life span of rats.

ABSTRACT

Background: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a serious disease characterized by the progressive elevation of the pulmonary arterial resistance, leading to the right ventricular failure and death. Objective: To evaluate the effect of rapamycin (RAPA), a potent cell-cycle inhibitor, on exercise capacity, right ventricular hypertrophy and pulmonary vascular remodelling on rats.

Sperm Quality as a Prognosticator in Intrauterine Insemination-treated Sub-Fertile Saudi Patients

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.245
Synopsis:
The study was designed to determine the most effective sperm parameter(s) that would help in prescribing intrauterine insemination (IUI) for infertility treatment, within a Saudi infertility patient sample for the first time. We concluded that the post-sperm preparation total motile sperms count (TMSC) is the main determining component among sperm quality parameters, and that the TMSC of at least ten million men are the recommended numbers for the IUI success.

ABSTRACT

Background: Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) stays as the most feasible infertility treatment, yet its success indications need further refinement.

Objective: This study aims to determine the most effective sperm parameters that help in prescribing IUI for infertility treatment within a Saudi population sample.
