Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) Risk Score as a Predictor of In-hospital Mortality for Acute Coronary Syndrome in Trinidad and Tobago

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.172
Pages:
52–9
Synopsis:
The GRACE risk score, which was developed in a predominantly Caucasian population, was not previously tested in a Caribbean population. This study found it to be a reliable predictor of in-hospital mortality in a multi-ethnic Trinidadian acute coronary syndrome population, making it a useful risk stratification tool.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine whether risk stratification using the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) risk score is a predictor of in-hospital mortality for ACS patients in a multi-ethnic Caribbean population.

Combinaton Therapy in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Single Centre Long-term Experience

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.148
Pages:
46–51
Synopsis:
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disease of the pulmonary vascular bed, and right heart failure is the leading cause of death. Treatment with vasoactive agents is crucial for these patient groups. We aimed to evaluate our treatment approach in patients with PAH patients as a tertiary centre.

Variations of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Pigment Epithelial-derived Factor are Related to Retinopathy of Prematurity in Human Babies

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.210
Pages:
251–5
Synopsis:
Increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels is associated with older postnatal day age. Monitoring of variations in VEGF level and pigment epithelial-derived factor/VEGF ratio might be helpful in predicting the occurrence of retinopathy of prematurity in premature human babies.

ABSTRACT

Background: To examine the role of variations in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and pigment epithelial-derived factor (PEDF) levels and VEGF/PEDF ratio in predicting the occurrence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in extremely premature human babies.

Cloning and Constructing a Plasmid Encoding Leishmania Eukaryotic Initiation Factor Gene of Leishmania major Fused with Green Fluorescent Protein Gene as a Vaccine Candidate

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.201
Pages:
256–9
Synopsis:
The LeIF gene was cloned into pJET1.2/blunt vector and then it was subcloned into pEGFP-N1 in the upstream of EGFP Gene. The recombinant plasmid could be used as a vaccine candidate against leishmaniasis and EGFP is used as a reporter to detect this protein expression.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Leishmaniasis is usually treated by chemotherapy; however, toxicity, resistance and high-cost limits the use of the chemical drugs. Leishmania eukaryotic initiation factor (LeIF) protein acts the same as interleukin (IL)-12 and reduces the secretion of IL-4 in lymph node cells of mice infected with L major. The aim of this study was cloning of the gene encoding LeIF antigen into eukaryotic expression plasmid pEGFP-N1.

Utility of the Tono-Pen in Measuring Intraocular Pressure in Trinidad: A Cross-sectional Study

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.125
Pages:
367–71
Synopsis:
The high specificity and negative predictive value of the Tono-Pen suggests that it is a useful tool requiring minimal training, and can prove beneficial at the primary care level in the exclusion of increased intraocular pressure.

The Radioprotective Effects of Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester and Thymoquinone on Oxidative and Nitrosative Stress in Liver Tissue of Rats Exposed to Total Head Irradiation

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.176
Pages:
1–7
Synopsis:
This study investigates the effects of the addition of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and thymoquinone on oxidative and nitrosative stress in the liver tissue of irradiated rats. Thymoquinone and CAPE decrease oxidative and nitrosative stress markers and have antioxidant effects, which also increase antioxidant capacity in the liver tissue of irradiated rats.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of addition of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and thymoquinone (TQ)on oxidative and nitrosative stress in the liver tissue of (IR) irradiated rats.

Methods: Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups to test the radioprotective effectiveness of TQand CAPE administered by intraperitoneal injection. Appropriate control groups were also studied.

Prevalence of Congenital Malformations in Grenada

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.331
Pages:
123–7
Synopsis:
The prevalence of birth defects in Grenada is low in comparison to Jamaica, as well as other developing and developed countries. Cardiovascular malformations were the most prevalent in this five-year study period.

ABSTRACTS

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of congenital malformations in Grenada for the period January 2000–December 2004.

Clinical Profile of Familial Mediterranean Fever in a Paediatric Population in Eastern Turkey

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.173
Pages:
281–6
Synopsis:
Familial Mediterranean fever is a frequently seen chronic inflammatory disease that can lead to severe morbidity and mortality if left untreated. Severity and frequency of attacks are correlated with mutations. However, environmental factors play an important role as the clinical course can differ even in people with mutations.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Clinical and genetic findings of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) may vary in different populations. Environmental factors may also affect phenotypic features of FMF. In this study, we investigated demographic, clinical and mutational features of FMF patients treated in a single reference hospital in Turkey.
