Trends in Incidence and Age Distribution of Oral Cavity and Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinomas, Kingston and St Andrew, Jamaica, 1978–2007

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.164
Pages:
128–33
Synopsis:
The incidence rates of tongue and tonsillar cancers have been decreasing in Jamaica but continue to predominate among older men. This is unlike data reported elsewhere, where rates have been increasing in young adults, and therefore warrants further study.
ABSTRACT

Objective: Several countries have reported increasing incidence of oral cavity and oropharyngeal (OCOP) squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) over recent years, particularly among young men and primarily in tongue and tonsil subsites, attributed to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This study examines trends in incidence and age distribution of OCOP SCC in Jamaica over a 30-year period.

Incidence, and Gender, Age and Ethnic Distribution of Sarcomas in the Republic of Suriname from 1980 to 2008

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.071
Pages:
121–7
Synopsis:
The incidence of soft-tissue and bone sarcomas in Suriname, as well as their gender, age, and ethnic distribution, probably do not differ substantially from international patterns. However, overall sarcomas and leiomyosarcoma may have a predilection for Afro-Surinamese rather than Asian-Surinamese.
ABSTRACT

Objective: We report on the incidence and the gender, age and ethnic distribution of sarcomas diagnosed between 1980 and 2008 in the multi-ethnic Republic of Suriname.

St George's University's Medical Student Research Institute: A Novel, Virtual Programme for Medical Research Collaboration

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.022
Pages:
81–7
Synopsis:
Medical student research involvement has evolved to be a core component of medical education. In 2009 the St George’s University’s Medical Student Research Institute was designed to encourage, support, facilitate and centralize medical student research.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Medical student research involvement has evolved to be a core component of medical education and is becoming increasingly vital to success in the United States residency match. We sought to develop a research website allowing students and research faculty to collaborate and complete projects online.

Sustainability of a Curriculum-based Intervention on Dietary Behaviours and Physical Activity among Primary School Children in Trinidad and Tobago

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.011
Pages:
68–77
Synopsis:
We investigated the long-term effect of a brief school-based curriculum intervention on dietary behaviours and physical activity among primary school children. The intervention was associated with significantly lower intakes of fried foods and sodas and higher knowledge scores 18 months later.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Pseudo-outbreak at a University Hospital Bronchoscopy Unit in Turkey

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.005
Pages:
59–61
Synopsis:
S maltophilia isolates were detected in four patients undergoing bronchoscopy during a one-week period. More attention should be paid to this microorganism as it can cause epidemics in intensive care units and operating theatres where invasive procedures take place. Appropriate disinfection procedures should be done and the staff should be continuously monitored and educated.

Comparative Evaluation of Ziehl Neelsen Staining and Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Laboratory Personnel in Relation to Ziehl Nielsen

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.247
Pages:
34–9
Synopsis:
This study sought to assess the efficiency of the modified Kinyoun cold method as a replacement for the Ziehl Nielsen (ZN) and to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of laboratory personnel in relation to the ZN method in Guyana.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe laboratory personnel's attitude and practices toward phenol exposure during Ziehl Neelsen (ZN) acid fast staining method and to evaluate the feasibility of an alternate modified Kinyoun cold (MKC) stain.

Use of the Complete Rockall Score and the Forrest Classification to Assess Outcome in Patients with Non-variceal Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding Subject to After-hours Endoscopy: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.316
Pages:
29–33
Synopsis:
Thirty-day, one-year mortality and re-bleeding rates were 16.7%, 32.9% and 14%, respectively in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding proven by after-hours endoscopy. A Rockall score > 2 was associated with an increased 30-day mortality. Rockall score and Forrest classification did not otherwise reliably predict adverse events.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To evaluate the usefulness of Forrest classification and the complete Rockall score with customary cut-off values for assessing the risk of adverse events in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGI-B) subject to after-hours emergency oesophao-gastro-duodenoscopy (E-EGD) with six hours after admission.

Resveratrol Ameliorates Diabetes-induced Renal Damage through Regulating the Expression of TGF-B1, Collagen IV and Th17/Treg-Related Cytokines in Rats

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.008
Pages:
20–5
Synopsis:
Resveratrol might ameliorate diabetes-induced renal damage though mediating the balance of Th17/Treg-related cytokines and inhibiting the expression TGF-β1 and collagen IV.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed at detecting the protective effects of resveratrol on diabetes-induced renal damage and on the expression of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1), collagen IV and Th17/Treg-related cytokines in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
