DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.343
Synopsis:
We evaluated the efficacy of allergic rhinitis treatment on attention deficit and hyperactivity symptoms in paediatric allergic rhinitis. We found that the combination of fluticasone furoate nasal spray and levocetirizine tablet may improve attention deficit and hyperactivity symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Allergic rhinitis (AR) may cause neurobehavioural symptoms and impair quality of life (QoL). We evaluated the efficacy of AR treatment on QoL, attention deficit and hyperactivity symptoms in paediatric allergic rhinitis.

Factors Influencing the Postgraduate Training Choices of Medical Interns and Junior Medical Officers at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Guyana

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.341
Pages:
69-73
Synopsis:
The information on new medical graduates’ specialty preferences and the factors influencing their choices is vital for effective and optimal medical manpower planning. Among Guyanese new medical graduates, the established specialties of paediatrics, surgery, internal medicine, and obstetrics and gynaecology were still the main areas of interest. Greater acceptance of the less popular specialties should be encouraged.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the specialty preferences and the reasons for those choices among medical interns and junior medical doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Guyana.

Methods: A cross-sectional study of recent medical graduates at GPHC using anonymous selfadministered questionnaires was used.

A Significant Association in Paediatric Emergency Department, Cerebral Sinovenous Thrombosis and Ulcerative Colitis: Review of Literature

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.290
Pages:
499-508
Synopsis:
In this study, we investigated the risk factors, clinical and laboratory findings, treatment and prognosis of cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT)—an important contributor to morbidity and mortality, associated with the progression of ulcerative colitis (UC) during childhood. The study inferred that CSVT should be considered in paediatric patients with a prior diagnosis of UC and presenting with symptoms of emesis, headache, and mood changes and particularly seizures.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To discuss cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT), an important mortality and morbidity factor, developing in the progression of ulcerative colitis (UC) in childhood age, in the light of the literature.

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.357
Pages:
464-70
Synopsis:
In this study, we aimed to investigate the serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and angiopoetin receptor Tie-2 in patient with essential hypertension. A total of 90 individuals were included. The data indicate that serum levels of VEGF and Tie-2 receptor may be related to the primer hypertension.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the serum levels of a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), an angiogenic factor and a soluble angiopoietin receptor Tie-2 (sTie-2) in patients with essential hypertension.

Synopsis:
Dietary and physical activity behaviours of Guyanese adolescents’ survey revealed that only one-tenth of youth are consuming daily recommended fruit and vegetable intake. Only half of youth participate in vigorous physical activity and less than half in moderate physical activity.

Ca 19-9 Could Predict both Advanced Disease and Nodal Involvement in Primary Mucinous Endometrial Cancers

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.367
Synopsis:
Since mucinous endometrial carcinoma is a rare disease, the parameters related to the extent of the disease should be clarified. Ca-19.9 is an important marker for mucinous pathologies and should also be evaluated for mucinous endometrial cancers.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Mucinous endometrial carcinoma is a rare disease. A study to evaluate and find predictive factors of mucinous endometrial carcinoma for advanced disease and nodal involvement was performed.
