For primary glomerular disease, focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis, minimal and membranous glomerulonephritis were the most frequent histological types.

ABSTRACT

Background: In 2006, it was reported that Focal and Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), Minimal Change Disease (MCD) and Membranous Glomerulonephritis (MGN) were the commonest primary glomerular diseases identified from percutaneous kidney biopsies done in Jamaica for that year (n = 76). The sample size was thought to be small and might have affected the reported findings. So a threeyear review of percutaneous kidney biopsies in Jamaica was carried out.

Overall quality of life in patients with end stage renal disease is good. Domain of highest concern were burden of kidney disease and patient satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

Background: Quality of Life (QOL) in patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is an important measure of dialysis adequacy. Health related QOL is an independent risk factor for mortality in ESRD. The Kidney Disease QOL questionnaire is a highly validated disease targeted instrument with global application. We sought to document QOL and the predictive factors in a cohort of patients with ESRD in Jamaica and Panama.

Cardiovascular Risk Profile in Caribbean Youth with Diabetes Mellitus

Synopsis:

In this study, there was a high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in the patients studied regardless of their diabetes type. While patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus were more obese and had higher blood pressure readings when compared with those with Type1 diabetes, their overall glucose control was better. Differences in lipid profile were no longer significant after adjusting for BMI.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the effect of diabetes mellitus type on conventional and novel cardiovascular risk factors in patients, diagnosed with diabetes from two major referral hospitals in Jamaica, before age 25 years and with diabetes duration < 6 years.

Synopsis:

The prevalence of personality disorder assessed by the Jamaica Personality Disorder Inventory (JPDI), the International Personality Disorder Examination Screening questionnaire (IPDE-S) and the consultant Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition-text revision (DSM IV-TR) instruments in medical wards in Jamaica is significantly higher than the prevalence rate of studies in other countries. The prevalence rate identified by the IPDE-S was significantly higher that the local instruments used.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the prevalence of personality disorders in patients admitted to the general medical wards of the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).
