Effect of a Cholesterol Rich Diet, Recurrent Infection and Possible Treatment Modalities on the Pulmonary Vascular System: An Experimental Study

Issue:
Pages:
132–6
Synopsis:
The study was designed to investigate the effects of infection and/or cholesterol rich diet combined with therapeutic and preventative agents such as antibiotic, anti-inflammatory agent and red wine on the pulmonary vascular system.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Infection may lead to inflammation, atherosclerosis and thrombotic vascular events. The atherosclerotic effect of hypercholesterolaemia on the vascular system is well-known. However, limited studies were done on the therapeutic and preventative agents. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of infection and cholesterol rich diet combined with an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory agent and red wine on the pulmonary vascular system.

Dengue HLA Associations in Jamaicans

Issue:
Pages:
126–31
Synopsis:
The HLA dengue associations in Jamaicans differ from those found in other ethnic populations. While HLA-A *24 and – DRβ5* 01/02 were associated with having dengue, HLA-A *23, -CW*04, -DQβ*02, DQβ*03 and –DQβ*06 were protective.

ABSTRACT

Background: Polymorphisms in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes might predispose certain individuals to dengue fever (DF) and the severe forms of the disease: dengue haemorrhagic fever/ dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS).

Molecular Epidemiology of Dengue in Jamaica Dengue Virus Genotypes in Jamaica, 2007

Issue:
Pages:
120–5
Synopsis:
A study of dengue viruses that were in circulation in Jamaica in 2007 identified strains of DENV-1 genotype III, DENV-2 strains of the American, American-Asian and Asian genotypes while DENV-4 strains segregated into a separate clade from published reference sequences.

Dengue Virus Serotypes in Jamaica, 2003−2007

Issue:
Pages:
114–9
Synopsis:
A study of the dengue viruses that were in circulation showed that all 4 serotypes were in circulation during 2003–2007 and the most prevalent were dengue serotypes 2 and 4.

ABSTRACT

Background: Dengue virus (DENV) infection is increasing in prevalence and severity globally. The severity of dengue is influenced by several factors including the immune response, viral and host genetic factors.

The Effect of Combining Interferon-a and Gefitinib in Human Colon Cancer Cell Lines

Issue:
Pages:
107–13
Synopsis:
Li Yang, Fang Wang, Fang He, LiYa HUANG Interferon-α promotes the antiproliferative effect of gefitinib on human colon cancer cell lines SW-480 and LOVO.

ABSTRACT

Background and Aims: Interferon-α (IFN-α) treatment is associated with up-regulation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression and marked growth inhibition of colon cancer cell lines. We aimed to determine the effect of combining IFN-α and gefitinib in the growth of human colon cancer cell lines.

Long-term Results after Treatment of Humeral Neck Fractures using Modified Hackethal Bundle Nailing

Issue:
Pages:
82–5
Synopsis:
This study reports the long-term surgical outcomes of elderly patients with humeral neck fractures who underwent treatment using the modified Hackethal bundle nailing method on the basis of an approximately 10-year follow-up study. This method is simple and less invasive.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study reports the long-term surgical outcomes of elderly patients who underwent surgery using the modified Hackethal bundle nailing method on the basis of an approximately 10-year follow-up study.

Posterior Ankle Impingement in Fast Bowlers in Cricket

Issue:
Pages:
77–81
Synopsis:
Posterior ankle impingement has not been described in cricket but is associated with ballet and soccer. An increase in this condition with development of os trigonum is being seen among fast bowlers in cricket. Treatment options are affected by bowling loads

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine common features of posterior ankle impingement in fast bowlers in the West Indies and to compare modes of treatment with respect to return to play without pain.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of ankle impingement injuries treated in fast bowlers in the West Indies.

Traumatic Mechanisms and Therapeutic Results of the Perilunate Injuries

Issue:
Pages:
73–6
Synopsis:
In this study, 18 patients who have had a perilunate injury with dislocation or fracture were evaluated. When the pathomechanics was estimated based on the Mayfield’s criteria, 17 patients were classified into state 3. However, only one case was extremely unusual and should be classified as the subtype of state 2.

ABSTRACTS

Objective: In this study, eighteen patients who have had perilunate injury with dislocation or fracture, were evaluated and the patho-mechanics and surgical treatment were studied.
