Audit of Sudden Deaths in the Accident and Emergency Department of a Tertiary Hospital in Trinidad and Tobago

Issue:
Pages:
61–7
Synopsis:
Sudden deaths in an accident and emergency department in Trinidad and Tobago were examined. The majority of deaths were cardiovascular, followed by trauma.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the proportion of deaths due to confirmed myocardial infarction (CMI) and the aetiology of sudden death at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital (A&E) department for January to June 2008.

Methods: This retrospective study utilized the death register to determine the number of A&E deaths for the study period. Patients dying from MI were investigated using records to obtain ECG and postmortem reports.

Antimicrobial Drug Resistance in Escherichia coli Isolated from Commercial Chicken Eggs in Grenada, West Indies

Issue:
Pages:
53–6
Synopsis:
The antimicrobial resistance profile of Escherichia coli isolated from 450 commercial chicken eggs in Grenada was studied. The data indicate that chicken eggs used in Grenada can harbour drug resistant E coli.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the antimicrobial resistance profile of Escherichia coli (E coli) isolated from the shell membrane and yolk of commercial chicken eggs in Grenada.

The Organization of the Brainstem Nuclei Associated with the Vagus Nerve in the Agouti (Dasyprocta Leporina): A Neurohistological Study

Issue:
Pages:
46–52
Synopsis:
This study has investigated the organization of vagal brainstem nuclei in the agouti and has shown organisation pattern similar to those of other commonly used laboratory animals. The larger size of this species makes it a suitable alternative experimental animal.

The Use of Helicobacter Pylori Stool Antigen Test for the Diagnosis of Helicobacter Pylori in Lagos, Nigeria

Issue:
Pages:
33–5
Synopsis:
The Helicobacter pylori Stool Antigen could be appropriate for the diagnosis and monitoring of Helicobacter pylori in Nigeria due to its relatively affordable cost and availability, unlike its counterpart and gold standard the urea breath test.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study was carried out to screen the use of Helicobacter pylori stool antigen (HpSA) tests for diagnosis and monitoring of H pylori in Nigeria.

Methods: Seven hundred and forty participants were enrolled after informed consent was obtained, while 83 came back for a post-eradication test. The stool samples were taken from the patients at endoscopy and tested for HpSA.

Comparison of Antibiotic Resistance and Virulence Factors in Pigmented and Non-pigmented Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Issue:
Pages:
24–32
Synopsis:
The study found that pigment production was significantly associated with multi-drug resistance, presence of virulence-associated genes, and expression of some important virulence factors. The authors conclude that since pigment production is easy to determine, this might be a good starting point to identify the virulence status of an isolate.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces multiple virulence factors that have been implicated in pathogenesis and quorum sensing. The aim of this study was to determine differences in the virulence factors of pigmented and non-pigmented P aeruginosa isolates.
