The Changes of Muscle FGF-6 Expression at Different Time Points after Exercise-induced Muscle Damage

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj/2012.285
Synopsis:
Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-6, accumulated almost exclusively in the myogenic lineage, possesses important functions in myogenesis. The changes of FGF-6 expression in regeneration and repair process after exercise-induced muscle damage indicate that FGF-6 is closely related to skeletal muscle regeneration and repair.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the changes of fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-6 expression in the regeneration and repair process after exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and the relationship with skeletal muscle regeneration and repair.

Short Term Effects of Cocoa Consumption on Blood Pressure

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.273
Pages:
312–7
Synopsis:
Previous studies showed that prolonged consumption of cocoa led to a decrease in blood pressure; however, whether cocoa consumption exerted an immediate effect on high blood pressure was unknown. This study showed that within an hour of consumption, a single intervention of cocoa induced decreases in both the diastolic and systolic blood pressures that were significant.

Diagnostic Accuracy of Spot and Timed Measurements of Urinary Albumin Concentration to Determine Microalbuminuria in Sickle Cell Disease

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.323
Synopsis:
We report that in sickle cell disease, both spot and two-hour timed urine collections for measurements of albumin concentration or albumin:creatinine ratios are good proxy measures of total 24-hour albumin excretion. These much simpler, and likely more cost-effective, methods can be applied in clinical practice with confidence.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Whereas measurement of albumin:creatinine ratio (ACR) in spot urine samples is indicated for determining microalbuminuria, its performance or that of urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER) in predicting microalbuminuria in sickle cell disease (SCD) is unclear. We therefore tested the diagnostic performance of these measures in spot and timed urine samples in predicting a UAER in 24-hour samples.

Role of Interleukin-6, Gamma Interferon and Adenosine Deaminase Markers in Management of Pleural Effusion Patients

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.253
Synopsis:
Interleukin-6, gamma interferon (IFN-γ) and adenosine deaminase (ADA) were investigated as diagnostic tools in pleural effusion. Our results suggest that there is a remarkable difference in production of these three markers in exudative pleural effusions as compared to transudative pleural effusions. However, diagnosis based on culture would be still the gold standard.

Correlates of Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety among Clinic Patients in Western Jamaica

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.177
Pages:
533–42
Synopsis:
To ascertain the prevalence of symptoms of depression and anxiety and their correlates, surveys containing sociodemographics and items from both the Beck Anxiety Inventory and the Beck Depression Inventory-II were administered to outpatient clinic attendees in Western Jamaica.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: There is a paucity of studies on psychosocial disorders in clinic populations in Jamaica. Therefore, we sought to determine the prevalence and correlates of symptoms of depression and anxiety in a clinic population in western Jamaica.

Surgical Management of Exertional Anterior Compartment Syndrome of the Leg

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2006.135
Pages:
529–32
Synopsis:
Data from a series of athletes presenting with leg pain were analysed. The diagnoses included exertional anterior compartment syndrome of the leg, medial tibial stress syndrome and stress fracture of the tibia. The diagnosis and surgical management of exertional anterior compartment syndrome are discussed in detail.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the characteristic presentation of exertional leg pain in athletes and to discuss the diagnostic options and surgical management of exertional anterior compartment syndrome of the leg in this group of patients.

Methods: Data from a series of athletes presenting with exertional leg pain were analysed and categorized according to aetiology.

Mean Platelet Volume is Associated with Glycaemic Control and Retinopathy in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.284
Pages:
519–23
Synopsis:
Mean platelet volume (MPV) is increased in diabetic patients. It is associated with the degree of glycaemic control. Moreover, MPV is higher in patients with diabetic retinopathy.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To investigate the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV) and glycometabolic indices, to compare MPV according to HbA1c levels, and to analyse the difference in MPV between patients with and without microvascular complications.
